WATCH THE ICEMAN.

Cloudy ice may be from one-third to two-fifths less efficient in cooling than transparent ice, stated" M. Taboury at the Toulouse Congress of Cold.

It ap- pears that the heat absorbed in the melting of clear ice is remarkably con stant and never varies more than five per cent. Cloudy ice, on the other hand, is very variable, sometimes, absorbing as much heat as clear ice, though usually much less.

IMPROVED MINE-COOLING,

A more econonrical and comfortable working of deep mines is claimed by Dietz, a German engineer, from the use of an improved method of cooling the air by means of the expansion of dried compressed air. The temperature, as is well known, increases with the depth, and in many German mines, with the heat considerably above 80 degrees F., the miners are not able to work more than six hours at a shift. The expense of operation is thus greatly increased, while

RITIÈT-UP SHEETS OF MICA. In the effort to meet the demand for large mies shoots, F. Bolling, German. has devised a plan for producing them artificially from mica waste by binding with a Bux or glaze such as is used for ramie ware. A suitable flux. melting between 200deg, and 950der. ., is found in such substances as lead borates and horo-silicates. Mica dess and flux material in alternate layers to the desired thickness are placed between top and hottom sheets of very thin mica, and the whole is subiectel to high pressure while being heated to the melting temperature of the flux. In a variation of the process. the flux material alone is used between the layers of thin aica.

LOCATING HIDDEN PIPES.

The electrical divining rod of an English firin, designed to trace under ground metal pipes, includes an electrical vibrator, induction coil and battery, with a detector coil connected to a telephone In use, the electric field producer by con necting a battery to the nearest hydrants, or other exposed attachments of the pipe induces a current in the detector coil, and this gives a sound in the teleobone that increases to a maximum as the coil is moved to the point on the surface nearest to the buried pipe..

THE DIAMOND CROP TO DATE.

The total diamond production from tag earliest times has been estimated by M.

de Launay, French metallurgist, at 28.2-5 tons, of a value of about 81,000,000,000. Of this quantity, India has supplies $85,000,000, and Brazil $100,000,000. These fields are now practically ex- hausted, and South Africa is the treat source of supply.
