SELF-TENDING LIGHTING APPARATUS.

An automatio electric-lighting outfit de- signed by a Gloucestershire manufactur- ing firm for private house use is mounted OTI two cross girders for convenient portability, and comprises an oil engine, dyliame, automatic starting switch, and 1180 water-tank. The small battery. supplied has a capacity much below that of the charging plant. The apparatus is so designed that while the battery is charged and not at work, the engine is at resh, and it continues at rest while the Iamps turned on are being fed sufficiently by the stored current. But when the ค certain battery voltage falls below point, the automatic switch sets the The starting- machinery in motion. current-quickly cut off by a time-limit circuit-breaker-turns the dynamo, and this starts the engine, which rane as long as needed. LIGHTNING BY WIRELESS.

Or

The message sent by a distant thunder- storm, it is pointed out, is detected by n kind of wireless-telegraph receiver, the electric waves sent through the atmosphere' being caught by a small aerial wire, and

coberer, passed along through a detector, to the ground. As the detector responds, it closes a delicate electric circuit, acting on a needle that is tracing a line on a cylinder rotated by clockwork The needle is momentarily moved to one side, and each discharge is thus recorded as a V in the needle's line. For measur- ing the strength of the discharge as it is
