BIG GAME IN CHINA.
Reviewing a recently published book entitled, "The Big Game of Central and Western China," by H. F. Wallace, F.R.G.S., F.2.8., The Times says: --
It would be rash to assert that Africa conceals no more new species of undis covered big game; the bongo, the okapi, the forest hog, and, more recently still, the mountain nyala suffice to enforce cantion. But it is at least unlikely that four new mammals as large as these are still thero unknown to zoologists. With respect to Asia no such reservation can be made; for the classification of the fauna is still so incomplete in many enormons districts that new discoveries of species of big gamo China are not in the least improbalde. eap cially is very largely an unknown quantity in this respect. Enormous areas are much too thickly populated and closely cultivated to yield any such novel. tics; but there are also huge remote and semi-disert. districts where almost any- INthing is possible zoologically. sible parts of China afford immense opportunities of sport to the wild-fowler frey and the small game hunter, but only a to the followers of big game; and hence: China has attracted little attention from the latter. Some of the far interior pro- vinces, however, contain prizos quite. unsuspected until the last few years, and may very easily, as has been suggested, be found ultimately to yield others still. Compared with the big game grounds of. Africa, the published accounts of China's. attractions for the hunter are meagre. And for that reason alone. Mr. Wallace's book would be of interest and value; even without the account of his ad- ventures and experiences on the long overland journey from Shanghai to Omsk across the Gobi desort.

This mountain dweller combines some of the anatomical charac teristics of a wild sheep with others of a wild goat, while its colour and much in its general aspect resemble superficially those of the Polar bear. The full-grown animal stands four feet three inches at the shoulder, and weighs six hundred- wright. The bulky body and short thick legs cortainly would not suggest a goat or sheep at the first glance; though there is, of course, doubt of the animal's near relation to both those tribes. Besides the detailed descriptions of stalks and the natural history of the animals hunted, there are full accounts of the strange: cities and sights which presented them- selves. If travel in China is not dow quite the novelty of a few years ago, at least it is not yet commonplace; and many of the scenes described are familiar as yet only to the missionaries, who were en countered fairly frequently even in the most remote and little known regions. Apart from this, he must be given credit for his very thorough accounts and excellent illustrations of the animals collected, and beyond that for a book of travel which is always genial and amusing.

To explain why Dr. Chapple and Mr. Cunninghame Graham did not go to China, as they intended to do, Mr. A. Lynch, the hon. secretary of the Radical China Group, wrote a letter last month, from which the following is an extract:- It is my duty to announce to you that a dolay has occurred in reference to the Parliamentary mission to China, for which our Group had appointed as delegates Mr. Camminghame Graham and Dr. Chapple. The delay was advised by the French Group, because the opening of the Chineso Parlia ment has been unexpectedly fixed for April 8.
