The public trial of William Alfred Wheeler, a British subject, 13 years of age, a bosior, of Abington Road, Leices tor, who is charged with entering into collusion with O. C. Kunau, head of the krin of Gens. Wheeler & Co., dealers in automatic knitters, of Rivoir Street, Leicester, with the object of selling auto- knitters woollen yarn, etc., by fraudulent means, and defrauding others of money, was commented at Yokobama on the 18th ult,

Judge Higashi was the Presiding Judge, and with him were Associate Judges Shigeta and Nagashima. Public Procurator Hattari conducted the pro

secution, the accused being seated with his Conse! Mr. J. E. de Boeker and Messrs. Sawada and Watanabo, Mr. Imadate nated as Court Interpreter. About fifty Japanese were present in Court.

The Judges entered the Court at half- past ten, and at once the proceedings opened, accused being plied with the usual questions as to age, residence, etc., after which the Public Procurator read the charge, briefly outlined above.

The examination of the accused thes proceeded as follows:-

At the branch office in Yokohama what kind of business have you been carrying on -The sale of hosiery machines and the goods produced by those machines.

What were the business relations bo- tween you and O. C. Kunau 1-I am his servant an employé of the firm.

Was it not a sort of partnership, and were you not one of the members -No.

As an employé of O. C. Kunau, under what conditions were you sent out to Japan -Under an agreement properly a salary and a certain commission on the drawn up by solicitors. I was to repert sale of machines.

You must have had some idea at the start as to how many machines would be sold in Japan-I considered nothing about Japan until I got here. I knew there was a dense population here, and I knew also there were no machines (of this make) on the market in this country. the market in to co bow consequently many would be needed, but I was pre pared to supply everybody.
