Tho Terra Nova, which went south to bring back Captain Scott and the other members of the expedition, arrived at the base at Cape Evans on January 18th of this year and obtained the following information from the shore party:
Captain Scott reached the South Pole- on January 18th, 1912, and there found Amundson's tent and records. On the return journey the whole of the South Party perished.
The history of the expedition is as follows:-Before the Terra Nova left for New Zealand in March last Surgeon Atkinson, who had been left in charge of the Western Party until the return of Captain Scott, despatched Mr. Cherry Garrard and the dog-driver Demetrie with twe dog tears to assist the Southern Party, whose return to Hut Point was expected about March 10th, 1919. Surgeon Atkinson would have accompanied this party, but was kept back in medical charge of Lieutenant Evans.

to relieve Lieutenant Campbell was made by Surgeon Atkinson, Mr. Wright, Petty Officer Williamson, and Petty Officer Keohane.
This party reached Butter Point, but they were there stopped by open water. Their return was exciting and nearly ended in disaster, owing to the son ice breaking up.
A search party left Cape Evans after the winter on October 30th last. It was consisted of two divisions, Surgeon organized by Surgeon Atkinson and Atkinson taking the dog teams, with Mr. Cherry Garrard and Demetrie, while Mr. Wright was in charge of a party which included Mr. Nelson, Mr. Gran, Mr. Lashley, Petty Officer Crean, Petty Officer Williamson, Petty Officer Keohane, and Btoward Hooper. Sevon Indian, mules were taken with the second party.
One Ton Camp was found to be in order and all provisioned. Then proceed ing along the old Southern route Mr. November 12th, Wright's party, on sighted Captain Scolt'e tent.
Within it were found the bodies of
Captain R. F. Scott, Dr. E. A Wilson, and Lieutenant H. R. Bowers.
THE DEATH OF CAPTAIN OATES. From their records the following information was gleaned :-
The first death was that of Petty Officer Edgar Evans, who died on February 17th at the foot of the Beardmore Glacier. His death was accelerated by concussion of the brain sustained while travelling over rough ice some time previously,
Captain L E. G. Oates, 6th Inniskilling Dragoons, was the next to be lost; Hia. feet and hands were badly frostbitten, and although he struggled on heroically his comrades knew on March 16th that his end was approaching. He had borne intense suffering for weeks without com- plaint. Captain Scott wrote:-"He was a brave soul. He slept through the night hoping not to wake, but he awoke in the It was blowing a blizzard. morning. Oates said am just going outside and I may be some time.' He went out into the blizzard and we have not seex him since." Captain Scott added: We knew that Oates was walking to his death, but though we tried to dissuade him, wo knew it was the act of a brave man and an English gentleman." It would appear that on March 16th Oates was really quite unable to travel. The others could not leave him.
After Captain Oates' death, Captain Scott, Dr. Wilson, and Lieutenant Bowers pushed northwards as fast as the weather, which was abnormally bad, would let them, but they were forced to camp on March 21st in Lat. 79deg. 40min. South, Long. 109deg. 23min. East.

In Captain Scott's diary Surgeon Atkinson found the following, which is quoted verbatim :-
MESSAGE TO THE PUBLIC.
The causes of this disaster are not due to faulty organization, bnt to misfortune in all risks which had to be undertaken.
1.--The loss of pony transport in March, 1911, obliged me to start later than I had intended and obliged the limits of stuff transported to be narrowed.
2. The weather throughout the outward journey, and especially the long galo in 83dog, South, stopped us,
Surely misfortune could scarcely have exceeded this Inst blow. We arrived within eleven miles of our old One Ton Camp with fuel for one he. meal and food for two days. For four days wo have been unáhle to leave the tent, a gale hlowing about us. We are work, writing is difficult; but for my own sake I do not regret this journey, which has shown that Englishmen can endure hardship, help one another, and meet death with as great a fortitude as ever in the past. We took risks-we know we took them. Things have come out against us, and therefore we have no canso for complaint, but how to the will of Providence, determined still to do our best to the last.
But if we have been willing to give nar lives to this enterprise, which is for the honour of our country, I appeal to our e untrymen to see that those who depend on us are properly cared for.
Had we lived I should have had a tale to toll of the hardihood, endurance, and courage of my companions which would have stirred the heart of every- English-
man.
