THE SINGAPORE OF YESTERDAY.

Singapore of to-day is not the same as of yesterday when the charin and ways of the East were predominant, and tha bustle of western life and western activity was conûned to its own quarter of the city. If in the Squaro there was "talk on change, a glance seaward sufficed to. remind us of the East. The native craft with their strange rig hailing from dis- tant islands in castern seas, the full flow of canvas on the large ocean sailers freighted with the treasures of China, Siam and Jave, and the varied costumes. of the races of southern Asia and India wore convincing evidence of the Orient.

Now the aspect has changed und the centre of the town presents an appearanc of western garb, the windows of the shops offering a display after the manner of those in our larger cities, and there is seen the rushing hither and hittier of rest- loss feet on commerce bent. Even tho Asiatic is thrown out of bis impassive ealm, ne the springs of self-interest un- wind their gear in shouts and gesticula- tions redolent of Southern Europe.

But at night soft shadows come to hide. the influences of European impressions and the lights, more brilliant than of old, serve, better to show up the waters of the roarlstead, on the shimmering fact which the native craft he rocking

small boats move around, reminding thi of the times when the roadstead was NO often the theatre of operations of those who make profit out of ways which are dark. The smuggling of arms, opium and other forbidden cargo from the hold of vessels or from some secret store on land to the smaller craft lying-a little off was a common if exciting experience. If plots were being hatched, and when were they not, by crafty rajahs and chiefs ngainst Dutch, Portuguese or Spanish rule, if a prince was secretly arming to depess a ruling monarch, if & filibuster- ing expedition was meditated against a native court, an illicit pearling voyage proposed, or a private injury called for re- taliation, all preparations had to be made. during cover of the friendly darkness, for the police could not be everywhere. From Come boat or sampan an occasional splash proclaimed a dangerous load consigned for a time to the trust and secrecy of the surrounding depths. Short and angry. questions on the part of the approaching! Patrol met with a stolid assumption of innocence, an impassive barrier that only the Chinaman can present, not to be broken down by surreptitious twistings and sundry blows. Had he seen? had seen moths. Had he heard! He had heard naught. He was a peaceful boat

The maan looking for a prosperous hire. reason he had come from his place near- the shore was the commendable desire to obtain a passenger that he might buy food for himself and remit for the benefit of his wife in distant China, So with usei less curses the patrol went on its way, the inspector inwardly lamenting the slow progress of the weary hours till the reljef might be expected.'
