A Lay Preacher

Brain Fag, Nervous Exhaustion—

Just a change of opinion was enough to give Mr. W. King his present prosperity, for he realised in the nick of time that his way was of curing his brain fag and nervous exhaustion, so he tried the Phosferine way, Mr. King's method was to igueze his despondency and feeling cf collapse, and persuade himself there was nothing unusual in the painful fatigue. the lightest effort to work cost him, until, as he steadily got worst, be resolved to drop his own opinion and see what. Phosferine could do, The result was so astonishingly beneficial, even after a few doses, that the brain fag and nervous exhaustion cessed entirely, enabling him to do more work than before and yet not feel the strain. This remarkable advantage is seen in the extraordinary energy and vigour of Mr. King's public speaking, and so amazingly have his prospects improved since his speedy recovery, that he declares he had to come forward with the evidence of the magnificent benefit he derived from Phosferine.

Gone-Never Return.

Mr. W. J. King, School Houce, Trumpington Rd., Forest Gate, London, E, writes: "I am writing to add my ranie to the list of those people who have found Phosferine to bo the Greatest of all Tonics. Some time back I was very much run down through overstrain brought on by incessant bodily exercise and mental application. The usual tendency of mankind is to give up some of their work, have a rest, and at the same time take medicine, so I endeavoured to keep going on without seeking advice, but as I was getting worse I found that policy would not do. Having heard many friends speak about Phosferine, and one in particular offering me some, I decided to give it a trial. Purchasing a 2/6 bottle, I began to doctor myself. The result not only astonished me, but others also noticed how much better I was, even althongh I had only taken a few doses. I found I could do the same amount of work easter, and at present are able to do more than before and yet not feel the strain. I have a good deal of public speaking, and I find an occasional dose of Pbosferine is a great benefit.—May 28, 1912.

LEVER BROTHERS' CONCESSIONS.

THE SIERRA LEONE RIGHTS.

Mr. Fred Hall, in the House of Com mors, on January 15th, asked the Secretary for the Colonies if the applica tion of Messrs. Lever Brothers, Limited, for certain trading concessions in Sierra Leone was frat nddressed to the Governor of that colony, and, being refused, trans- ferred to the Colonial Office; if the concessions had now been granted in a form slightly different to the original application; the nature and duration: of the concessions, and the terms obtained therefor,

Mr. Lewis Harcourt, in reply, caid: The application of Messrs, Lever for certain rights in Sierra Leone was first addressed to the Colonial Office. The con- cessions were granted in a different form, as appeara in the correspondence recently presented to Parliament,

Mr. Hall asked if the concession was put up to public tender,

Mr. Harcourt said: No; it never has been the custom.

Mr. Rupert Gwynne asked if Buy cor- respondence passed between the Colonial Office and Messrs. Lever Brothers or their representatives between July, 10th, 1908, and October 31st, 1909, and, if so, would bo give a copy of it.

Afr. Harcourt: If, as I presume, the hon. member refers to correspondence as to concessions in West Africa the answer is in the negative.

Mir, Gwynne also asked whether it is intended in future, before granting con cessions in Sierra Leone, to publish par- ticulars in the Government Gazettes three months before ratification; and, if so, why this was not done before granting & concession to Mesars. Lover Brothers extending over an area of 160,380 acres.

Mr. Harcourt: The answer to the first part of the question is in the affirmative.. In regard to the second part, the applica- tion of Mears. Lever was the first of its kind. Legislation was necessary before effect could be given to it, and the pro- ceedings in connection with much legisla tion were then regarded as suficient publication,

Mr. Gwynne asked if the publication was only made after the contract was entered into, and when it was too lato for any other firms to competo.

Mr. Harcourt: I do not think it was after the contract was entered into, bat it was after the proposal was first made. Obviously it could not have been made carlier.

Mr. Gwynne: If it was not necessary to publish it in the Gazette for three months before the arrangements were made, why is it necessary now?

Mr. Harcourt: The whole thing is quite new,

I think a three months'

publica tion is a desirable improgement.

Mr. Gwynne next asked if the Colonial Secretary would give a copy of the draft Ordinance which was prepared at the Colonial Ofice and forwarded to the Gov ernor of the Gold Coast, on May 3rd, 1019 relating to the proposed grant to Messrs. Lever Brothers of certain rights in connection with the erection of oil mills and depericarping machinery.

Mr. Hargourt: The draft Ordinance has already been presented to Parliament.

Mr. Gymne further asked why the fol lowing letters had been omitted from the correspondenco published by the Colonial Offer pecting the grant of exclusive rights he extraction of oil from palin fruit iz Latter dated October 28th, 1907, om Messrs. Lover Brothers to the Colonial Office, letter dated August 31st, 1910, from the Colonial Office to Messrs. Lover Brothers; and letter dated October 14th, 1902, from Messrs, Simpson, North, Harley & Co. to the Colonial Office; and would he have copies of these letters laid upon the table of the House.

Mr. Harcourt I included all material papers in the correspondence presented to Parliament The letters referred to by the hon. member are of no importanced, and not worth the cost of publication; but I will hand them to the hon. member, and leave him to be the judge in the matter. If he wishes it they shall be printed.

THERE IS ONLY ONE BOVRIL.

A new practical scheme generally for raising the dignity of business and parti cularly for opening business careers to public school and university men is out- lined and very persuasively urged by Mr. H. E. Morgan, who can speak with ex- perience, in this month's Review of Reviews. The idea is to establish a central bureau with an advisory board of business men and educational authorities It which would have a double effect. would help to give the business com. munity an appreciation of the quality of men educated at public schools and it would open the eyes of schoolmasters and dons to the honourable scope effered by business and commerce to men of high education and character who had some special training,

It is beyond argument that hundreds of our best men adopt formal and mechani- cal professions and dwarf their capacities by settling at once into an official groove because it is the tradition of their schools and of their class to neglect if not to de- spise business. If on leaving a university they reject this tradition they find them solves unequipped for striking out career, solely for want of a few necessary but quite small items of knowledge and facts of experience. This slight educa- tional deficiency is continually baulking the excellent employments bureau estab lished at Oxford, which has made the first step towards Mr. Morgan's ideal. How many fine openings have been there lost for want of a little more glibness in. French a nodding acquaintance with Spanish, or a more practical knowledge of aciones. the personnel of the business community the batter for the nation. If, says the Daily Mail, Mr. Morgan's bureau can im prove this, it will do national work of the highest utility.

On the arrival of the B. I. steamer CLARKE'S Ellenge at Rangoon from the Straits at

8 4.m. on the 4th instant, a curious inci- dent occurred in the smoking room of the vessel, where the first class passengers-as- sembled to declare any dutiable goods. In the course of the examination of baggage Mr. Thayer, an American tourist, produced a revolver and placed it on the table. He was asked to say if ho had any cartridges for the weapon and informed the Customs officer that the only cartridges. he had were in the weapon, which was loaded. One of the Customs officers picked up the pistol from the table and, in examining it, must accidentally have preased the trigger. The revolver went off, the bullet passing between two persons who were seated on one of the beaches in the ronin and lodging itself in the woodwork of the staircase leading down from the smoking room. The Ame rican, remarked that he had had the weapon for twenty years, and had never discharged it in all his life. cartridges, were then removed.
