TERRIBLE FATE OF STEAMER'S CREW.
A NIGHT OF BOEROR. Tidings of a shipping disaster off the Scilly Islands, of the loss of fifteen lives and of a night of horror in the storm, were brought to the Cornish fishing village of Newlyn, near Penzance, by two survivors of a foundered steamer. They were Captain Oerbach, of Copenhagen, skipper, and Lindvig Trosiervie, aged 25, of Kiel, a member of the crew of the Danish steamer. Volmer, whose loss became known when these two men were landed. The ship left Swanson on Christmas Eve for Nico with a cargo of coal. Me
Captain Oerbach said that a gals was blowing when he sailed, but he put to so because he feared he would not be able to get bin crew together again until after the holidays. As it was they sailed with two men absent, though the seventeon aboard were quite sufficient to man the ship. "The weather moderated until we passed the Scilly Islands light at eight o'clock on Christmas evening. Then, we began to experience the full force of the terrible Atlantic gale. Although the waves mount ed higher and higher, we had to keep full steam ahead in the tooth of the storm in order to be able to stoer at all.
"All night we struggled on, but at. half-past ten on Boxing Day morning, when about 25 miles south of the Scillica,
tremendous ses broke aboard, sweeping away everything on deck, ripping off the bulwarks and smashing in the batchways. Water rushed in torrents into the hold and engine room, putting out the engine. room fires and leaving the sitip practically in a sinking condition. We thought our and had come. Howovor, the steamer lifted berself out of the trough of the sea and the crew tried to cover the hatchwayé, They found then that everything had been washed away, and hope 'was aban- doned. I seized my only chance, turned the steamer round and let her run before the galo.
CAPTAIN'S JUMP FOR LIFE..
For five hours wo drifted helplessly, and at three o'cloth we found the steamer actually sinking beneath us. We had been flying signals of distress and we noticed another steamer some distance away. I do not: think she could have understood our position exactly or she would have come to our aid when we first sighted her; and find she done so we might all have been saved. As she did not come I The ordered the boats to be lowered. first one was smashed and some of the crew were drowned. The last bont capsized, and when I locked over the side, I saw six men clinging to her keel The boat had drifted away from the Volmer, but I jumped overboard and swam to her. We turned the boat over and scrambled in. Almost directly afterwards we saw the Volmer sink. We made a vain attempt to reach the other steamer, and then dark- ness fall. It was then my men began to die one after another until only two of us were loft alive. During a terriblo thunderstorm the vivid flashes of light- ning showed us two steamers, which passed us without seeing us, and left us in an agony of despair. We had no oars and no water, and when we tried to get a bit of bread from the air-tight tank the san snatched it away from us as we eat- in the boat up to the neck almost Ta water Several times during that fright ful night of horror we were washed out of the boat, but managed to scramble back again. All next day we drifted, and night found us in the same pitiable con- dition. To afford ourselves some alight shelter from the blinding rain and the lashings of the sea we covered ourselves as best we could with a bit of sail, and I believe it was that which eaved me from perishing.
AGONIES OF THIRST..
"We were suffering agonies from thirst, and my companion wanted to suck the sail to obtain relief. Knowing that the cloth was saturated with salt water and that it would drive him mad I prevented him from doing so, and thrusting my hand out caught some rain drops with which we moistened our lips... Throughout the night we drifted, and it was not until ten o'clock on Saturday morning that we were espied by a sailing ship. She, under sail could not maneuvre to reach us, but signalled to the Thez (a Belgian steam trawler), who came alongside and threw us a rope which we had just enough strength to fasten round our waists. Dragged through the sea we lost consciousness, and woke to find ourselves in a bank."
Captain Cerbach, who had been on the Valmer since, she left the builder's gard on the Wear seven years ago, told his story with tears running down his cheeka.
STARTING HORSE RACES.
The London Daily Chronicle enumerates 554 horses which got away badly from starts during the 1912 fat-racing season, apart from a number of others which were kicked at the post. The newspapers contend that the system of starting horses from the standing position in conjunction with the starting gate, has been a failure. It urges the Jockey Club to test the walk- up start.

HISTORIC 13's."
Whatever the year 1913 may have in store for the world, it will at least be memorable as a centenary at one or more removes of famous men and events the are prominent in the pages of history. For six hundred years, up to a century ago, the thirteenth year of a country has been marked by something or somebody of outstanding note.
In 1713 was signed the Treaty of Utrecht, which terminated the wars of Queen. Anne, secured the Protestant successor in England, separated the French and Spanish crowns, and enlarged the British possessions in America..
