HUMOURS AND SURPRISES OF RUSTIC ENTERTAINMENTS.

SONGS THAT NEVER DIE

At this time of year, writes a correspon. dent of The Evening Standard, every rural village stimulates itself by a con- cert. And a concert is a powerful topic. It is a new topic of talk-a matter to be thankful for. Be you goin' to the com sart then, Jarget" is a pleasant variation from the usual formula with which we give George greeting. And, of course, George is going; it is the great function of a concert to bring a rural community together, The concert brings out charac ter, and if you can sing, tell a story, play fiddle, or whistle, or mouth-organ, here you have the chance to show of what stuff you are minde, stuff otherwise. perhaps, never to be revealed, at least, not before distinguished company. There is also the elevating influence of music to be noted, perhaps a somewhat theoretical benefit, Much more might be said in this strain, but to our mind, when all is saint, the chief virtue of the rustic concert ie the chance it gives for the blessed minintra- tions of the comic spirit.

"MR. BROWN WILL DELIGE."

The attendance of the squire, with his lady, in her full panoply of evening-dress, at once curries the affair to a high realm, and increases to a considerable degres the performer's nervousness. Along with the squire as a patron is that twin pillar of the county, the parser, who by right of custom and precedence announces each item of the programme, adding usually some whimsical comment on the treat in store, enough to justify the utarust state of flutter on the part of any performer about to take the stage. The way parson announces that Mr. John Brown will kindly now oblige us with a humorous recitation, would make any stranger think that Mr. John Brown was some famous artist from London, instead of merely being Jack, the grocer's boy-and the way he goes on, after a long pause. "If you have tears, prepare to shed then now. Insures the success of Jack's poor attempt to be amusing, painful, indeed. if it were not for the comic spirit's mini- strations. The school-room is packed, for the rest, with mothers, inthers. and babies, and many a lad with his lass; and behind all, at the door, the figure of the policeman in uniform looms up, benign and enormous.

PERSONALITY TELLS

A village concert may be regarded in another light, as a grand test of endur- ance. It proves that the patient spirit with which our forefathers listened to sermons running on well towards two hours in length is not yet dead. The pro- gramme contains some thirty items, and, of course, it is the bounder duty of the audience to cry encore after every effort, otherwise feelings might be sadly hurt, Fortunately the programme is divided into two parts, so that it is quite admissible, after one hour and a half of music, to murmur something about "a whiff of 'baccy before the second part begins." and when once out under the stars it is only a step to the Blue Anchor, where in a few minutes as much beer passes down expectant throats as would do credit to a brisk trade on Saturday night..

Many of the performers bring the house down rather by reason of their person- ality than by their musical talent. When the parson's pretty daughter trips on to the stage to play the opening pianoforte solo, the policeman is obliged to frown quite severely to quell the tempest of clapping and stamping at the back of the hall.. What she plays to us on the arouse the crazy piano never could slightest emotion-bus it is otherwise with ber smile-wreathed face. When the miller obliges with his one old song, we cheer him to the echo, for he has sung the song at every concert for fifty years or more. The gamekeeper's song receives also an ovation. Some of us present may occa sionally set down a few wires, some youngsters at the back may have felt the force of the keeper's ash-stick as they fled from him for their lives, with their birds' eggs or primrose roots; but all take the chance to show their appreciation of the keeper as a man and a songster; all know that much power resta in his hands.

SONG OF THE WOODLANDS. The success of the evening comes from an unexpected quarter-it is a breath from the forest, A man, as huge among men as the oak among trees, clad in a coarse whitish smock, in leathern leggings, carrying in his girdle a bull'e-eye lantern, volunteers to try an old song or two, though he declares he bas never in his life sung before company, or to a piano.. In deep, true, sonorous tones the jolly forester trolls song of the woodlands: there is in it the rush of the wind among trees, there are sweet, wood wild notes, as of birds singing, there is the roaring music When first that of a falling cataract. mighty melody burst out in the hushed Toom, it fairly took our breaths away, it was as if a hurricane had struck the school. We would not let him go until he had sung a half-dozen song songs his fathers had sung, he said, never heard nowadays. The squire's lady shook the forester by the hand, and said she never had heard the equal of his voice even in Londontown, The squire remarked he had always thought there was no more natural music of the sort left in the coun-- try, that the old songs of the people were
