Addressing the gathering, Bishop POZZONI said:-Reverend Mothers Re- verend Fathers, Sisters, and children- I am glad of this opportunity to meet you each year when I find myself in a position to show you the interest which I take in the work of your school. I am pleased to state that, according to the report of the Director of Education, a substantial improvement is noticeable throughout the school. There has been tuarked progress in English during the year, and although arithmetic is still rather a weak subject, satisfactory results bave been obtained in some of the classes. Two pupils who obtained the Oxford Junior Certificates were Miss Andrée Legueur and Miss Vera Crees; and three obtained the Preliminary Certificates- Miss A Enid Betts, Miss Lina dos Remedios, and Miss Vera Danenberg. The latter, being an underage candidate, won the Lugard Scholarship at the Christ- mas Examination.

Nor is that all. You must be devoted to your studies, attached to your books, and obedient to the guidance of your teachers. It may s0 happen that, at times, your teachers' directions may not be always pleasing to your inclinations; it becomes then your duty, as a disciplinary act, to follow then against your will. Remember that there is in our nature a desire to follow our own wish, more so when that wish is opposed to the views of those who are set over 18. I ask you to try and overcome that inclination and make it yield to the dictates of your superiors, whether in or out of school. To the grown-up girls I have yet some other advice to give.

I should be sorry to be considered one of those who dears the educational and instructive value of the eineraatograph, but I say without fear of contradiction that the so called "picture palaces" where all manner of films are indiscri- minately thrown on the screen without regard to the character of the audience are no places for school girls. There is a growing disposition among some girls to indulge in what is called a period of romance. This is another form of dis traction from hourst school duties that you cannot guard yourselves too carefully against. Your first consideration at school is the improvement of yourselves intellectually and the acquirement of that which makes that moral Relf-control character which is to be expected from every good and virtuous woman. You have in the Sisters who have been placed in charge over you ladies who have devoted their lives to your well-being, and I ask you to regard them as your best counsellors and friends

THE LADY OF 113, Count Okuma delivered an eloquent in! augural address, but failed to hold the attention of his audience, most of whom, though they made car-trumpets of their hands, could not catch his words owing to the deafness of advancing age, and found themselves lulled by the gentle hum, added by the genial warmth of the autumn sunshine, into a condition of They were occa- pleasant drowsiness. sionally roused to full wakefulness by the voice of Nami Shimooka, who, justly proud of her seniority, repeated at in- tervals,It is I who live to be 113." punctuating Count Ckuina's speech, often very aptly, with this remark.

Certain other old ladies used, like the majority of aged Japanese women, to spend almost the whole day in the Buddhist temples-muttered invocations over their rosarios, evidently under the impression that the sound they dimly heard was the droning of some Buddhist priest. The gathering eventually broke up at five o'clock and was voted a great success by all the participants.
