WRECKED NEAR SINGAPORE.
TWO RUSSIAN STEAMERS.
Early last week boisterous weather was experienced in the neighbourhood of Singapore. The skipper of the Ban Liong, which arrived in Singapore on the 7th from Bangkok, reported that on New Year's Day, while about 60 miles off Pulau Ohi, the monsoon blow so strong, and the scas ran so high, that the vessel began to ship too much water. In order to lighten hir a quantity of the cargo, rice, was jettisoned. Nearer home, they saw the biggest waves they had ever seen at Horsburgh Light breaking over that isolated rock. The Horsburgh, indeed, bad been gaite anapproachable for more than a week. When the Seurieu went there with the usual monthly relief of men and stores it was found impossible to effect a landing and she had to return to Singapore without having carried out her purpose.
In the ear wild neighbourhood, on the morning of Friday, the 3rd inst., the Russian stramer Prier March was lost.
The Peter March, a vessel of 691 tons nett, owned by the Northern Steamship; Co. and registered at St. Petersburg, was bound from Calculta to Vladivostock with She put into Singapore a cargo of tea. in passing on the 1st inst. and left the port again on the same day to continue her voyage Outside, they ran into heavy Beas, but there appeared to be no danger until the night of Thursday, the 2nd inst. At ten o'clock that night it was found thas the ship had sprung a serious leak in the tunnel aft. Every effort was made to stop it and anything that was at all likely to be effective was used. Plags, pillows, mattresses, rope, etc., were all employed in the desperate work, but the inflow still continued, although somewhat abated. The crew was ordered to the pumps and all night long the battle between the pumps and the incoming sea was kept up, while the cantain headed the ship for the Pedra Branea reef, on which Horsburgh light is situated, and near which there are sands on which he hoped to beach the vessel.
The dawn of Friday was accompanied by a raging storm of wind and rain, but it brought the welcome sight of land. It was, in fact, the Nicoi Islands which lie south of the Horsburgh. The pros- pect, however, did not offer any hope of refuge and the captain shaped a course to keep clear of the island. At the same time it was thought possible to make Singapore, and the ship was headed in that direction..
In the course of the morning the vessel struck a rock a few miles off the Nicois and ripped her hull so seriously that she immediately began to settle. Boats were lowered, and despite the tempest the officers and crew were able to get into them and make for land. There they had a very trying time. The natives were at frat frightened of the castaways, and there was every prospect of the latter going very hungry unless speedy relief cane. Fortunately, the Malays got over their scare when they realised the deplor- able plight of the European sailore and they supplied them with coconuts and rice,
The Chief Officer and several Malays were despatched in a native boat to Rhio, that being the nearest place from which help, ruight be hoped for. They were away three days, during which time the remainder of the castaways lived in
