AILMENTS OF THE THROAT.
THEIR CURE AND PREVENTION.
Under the existing climatic conditions. throat ailments are becoming prevalent. Among the most frequent are simple sore throat, tousillitis and ulcorated sore throat.
These affections are due to germs which have been inhaled by the sufferer and have multiplied in his throat, overcoming his powers of Isistance to them, because his vitality has been lowered by over exertion, worry or illness, etc.
Whatever the throat complaint, it is of the atmost importance that it should be checked as rapidly as possible, that he sufferer may be prevented from getting any of the serious germ diseascs-like diphtheria-which begin with sore throat, To cure any complaint, the cause must first be removed. In thront diseases, the cause is the presence of the gorms in the throat.
It is, therefore, essential that they must be destroyed.
Until a few years ago, gargles were universally used for the purpose. To: day, this treatment is known to be useless, fo, as a specialist has written in The Lancet
Gargles are best avoided, especially when the parts are influed," for they cannot reach the germs in the moro distant parts of the throat,

A MARINE UNDERWTMLITER ON
MODERN COND',
ITIONS.
THE HONGKONG DAILY PRESS, FRIDAY, JANUARŸ 10rm, 1918.
LECTURE BEFORE, TIBURANCE INSTITUTE."-
In the cdutiloan interesting paper on "Modern Morine Underwriting road last month before the members of the Insurance I stitute of London in the Great Hall, Winchester House, E. C., Mr. Nicholis, underwriter to the E F. Londo Assurance Corporation, discussed the qualifications necessary in the marine
derwriter, of to-day.
Mr. Nicholis painted out that the modern mariae underwriter has to deal with a vastly different set of problems from theso which confronted his predeces sor of even very few years ago, but the necessary qualifications remain much the same; to be successful He is called upon to exercise an enormous amount of judg ment, he must always be discriminating. and he must have plenty of nerve, plenty of patience. He has to know the good and bad seasons of the year all over the world; the good and bad ports, good and bad shipbuilders, shipowners, and types of vessels, and whether a steamer accord- ing to her capacity and dimensions is suited to carry a heavy cargo or not...He has to study world pulities so as "to be able to put a proper value upon war risks: in fact, there is hardly any subject upon which he can afford to be ignorant or indifferent. In reality he has now, as always, to be a general compendium of knowledge Mr. Nicholls explained that as always" because he had the he said risk book of 1723 by his side at the Loadon Assurance, in which he found that the underwriter fixed the premiums for life 3 well as for umring business in those early days. As to the general knowledge it was no use even trying to be an under- writer if, when you were offered a risk from London to East London, you replied, as an underwriter actually answered once, that you must refuse the business because you never wrote craft risks on the Mr. Nicholls also cited the Thames " case of another pulerwriter, who, when a risk on coolies from Calcutta to the placed before him, West Indies was stipulated that they must be packed in tin-lined cases.
