SHIPPING DEVELOPMENTS.
The Times in a recent article says:- The people of this country have been made by shipping. Romane, Saxons, Danes, Normans, and all the smaller infusions that have gone to wake the race as the world now knows it, came here in ships. As a nation we are sea-born, and ever since the nation took shape it has been at home upon the sea. Its matérial and economic development has ever been closely linked with its shipping, the influence of which upon its mental and legs though spiritual development, measurable, must have been enormous. In a general way every one is, of course, aware of the great part that our shipping Every one plays in our national life. knows that we depend upon it in the most

ment. Bat generalities so wide do not; sink very deep into mon's minds, and often are not vividly enough realized to bave much effect upon the texture of their thought or their attitude towards import- ant publie questions. We have therafore thought it useful to present the whole Rubject, as we do to-day, in a more con- crete form; to tell people who know that our shipping is great just how great it is; to give some precision to general impressions about the increase in the size and number of ships; to afford some insight into the complexity of the organization of British shipping and the immense energy, intelligence, and capital that go to maintain the services which people are too apt to accept as a matter of course; and to help them to realize that, apart from all direct services, British shipowners are the heat customers of our most important manufacturers, and supply a stimulus to industry in general greater than any that comes from any Those who are other single source. fortunate enough to be interested in a story as full of romance as it is pregnant to all-important with considerations national well-being will find our issue of to-day an encyclopædia of information, in which they may study at least the leading facts connected with whatever aspects of the shipping industry they may think especially attractive.

Perhaps there is no more frequent subject of comment among the travelling public than the rapid increase in the sizo ot ships. Even those who gladly avail themselves of the accommodation of a great modern liner are apt to shake their heads and ask where this mad competi- tion, or this insensate worship of mere is going to stop. They may bigness, learn from one of our articles that the not due to the causes increase of size they imagine, but to the operation of a natural law very familiar to physicists, in virtue of which the cost of propulsion at given speed is reduced as the size of the vessel increases. The bigger ship is the cheaper ship to drive through the water, provided, of course, that she be engaged in a trade that affords her full freights. If it be asked why increase of size was so slow until a recent period, the answer is that the law was not practically known, and, if it had been known, its application would have been limited by the absence of scientific advance in other directions. Quite recently there was a serious obstacle to further increase of size, in the circumstance that reciprocating "engines powerful enough to drive large ships would have occupied a prohibitive amount of space and would also have caused too much vibration. That obstacle was removed by the invention of the steam turbine, and increase of size followed very quickly. The internal combustion engine now threatens the turbine with serious competition, and, if certain practical difficulties can be overcome, its use of oil fuel will further economize space. As the use of oil fuel increases-and it is increasing rapidly- its cost will increase and another factor will come into play. Selence is already seeking the means of using coal directly without the intermediate production of steam. If that problem can be solved for new revision of marine purposes, a accepted ideas will ensue, to be followed,' no doubt, by new developments as remark able as any that preceded.
Nervous Exhaustion, Neuralgia,
Sleeplessness-
The 'fact that Mrs. Taylor did not give up her work, and did not go for a change, is clear proof Phosferine proveated the nervous breakdown which her doctor said was certain unless she gave up ke duties. Mrs. Taylor is of the sort who gives up easily, although she was worn to a standstill with neurasthenia and sleeplessness, and realising that neither change or rest was possible, she con cluded the only certain way to keep going was to supplement ber vitality with Phosfarine. The actual benefit Mrs. Taylor experienced within a few hours exceeded even the relief she knew would result from Phosferine, every nerve centre in her system began to resume its activity, thus promoting her recovery with daily mcreasing rapidity. Now that all traces of nervous disorders are expelled, and she sleeps sounder and cats better than ever, Mrs. Taylor urges other exhausted workers not to give up, but employ Phosferine to gentrate a new supply of nerve force and feel for themselves how capable, vivacious, and happy. natured this new energy makes, everyone,
Completely done with..
Mrs. K. E. Taylor, 369, Goldhawk Road, Chiswick, writes:-"The benefit I have received from Phosferine is almost incredible. I had been suffering for months from 'Nourasthenia, everything was a burden to mis, head pains and body pains were constant, I could, not eat, neither could I sleep I felt utterly ill and wearied out, and after struggling on for some time, I was told by my doctor there was nothing for it but to give up my situation or to go away for a change. For many reasons, either would have been my last wish. I remembered Phosferine had done me so much good 14 years ago in a case of neuralgia arid weakness following maternity, and so I started your remedy again. I consider it has agai worked miracles for me, I can eat and sleep well, and am able to perform my duties, which comprise not only household affairs, but brain work, with ease and pleasure.”—April 24, 1912.
