RADIOACTIVITY FOR USE.

Various methods of using radium are being devised. Versein of glass or alumi- num cut off much of the active rays, and M. Lieber, u French inventor, prepares a so-called "active screen", by covering n celluloid disc, plate or red with a paint of some radium compound in a suitable adlieront material. This may be coated with collodion, a varnish giving protec tion without matorially lessening the radiation. Radium gelatine" is a solution of sterilized gelatine containing a little radium salt, and is found by medical men to be convenient for internal use or for external application on absor bent cotton. A class of radioactive pre- parations for subcutaneous injections has been patented by A. D. Szendeffy of

similar substances combined with iodine or bromide or their compounds, with the addition of a fat or glycerine and a radium compound; an example being menthol dissolved in olive-oil and covered with a solution of iodine in potassium iodide, with the addition of radium bromide. The fat sointion takes up the jedine and becomes radionetive.

OIL-LAMPS AS SIGNALS.

In tests of oil-lamps as weather signals at night, reported by G. Ishida from the Japanese meteorological station at Hana- de, it has been found that the light of flat wicks is much brighter at a distance than that of round wicks, and that the range of red lights is about double that of green. The latter became practically invisible at two miles, while rod lights were still bright at three miles.

NITROGEN FOR POWER.

The nitrogen for driving machinery supplied by the Nitrogen Company of Berlin is compressed to 200 atmospheres, and is mid to cost about seven cents per thousand fest. A by-product of the pre- paration of compressed nitrogen is liquid Carbonic acid.

A DOUBLE MICROSCOPE.

A novel optical instrument, in the shape of a comparison or double-field micros- cope, was described in a paper prepared by Dr. W. Thorner for the late meeting of the Institute of Metala. It consists of two microscope tubes mounted on a single stand and having a single eyepiece, but each tube has its own coarse adjustment, objective,, stage, substage and mirror.. A prism-box, surmounted by the crepiece, connects the tubes at the top. Two prisms in each side of the box-project into the eyepiece the light rays from the corres- ponding tube by giving them two turna at right angles. The two priams in the centre of the box are mounted on a slide, and when they are in the central position the circle of vision in the eyepiece is made up of a semi-circular area from each microscope, but moving to right or left causes the slide to shift the field of view to either microscope alone. This double instrument is expected to be useful for

A METAL-VAPOUR LAMP GIVING WHITÈ LIGHT.

A new German metal-vapour lamp is designed to give a white light instead of the objectionable greenish light of the mercury-vapour lamp. The new lamp has one or both electrodes of cadmium mixed with a small proportion of mercury, and the white glow of the vapour of these metals as the electric current passes is claimed to yield a light equal in economy to that of the mercury vapour clone. The cadmium-mercury alloy solidifies on the inside of the quartz tube as the lamp cools, quickly turning into vapour again with the switching on of the current.

TREES THAT LIGHTNING STRIKES. The relation of trees to lightning, as shown by F. G. Plummer in a recent bulletin of the United States Forest Ser- vice, does not wholly accord with popular baliefs. It is found that trees are the objects most often struck because they are the most numerous of all prominent objects, they offer a short course to the ground, and their spreading branches in the air and roots in the soil present an ideal conductor to the ground. Any kind of tree may be chosen by the lightning, the greatest number in any locality being found among the dominant species. The likelihood of any tree being struck is in- creased if it is taller than surrounding trees, is isolated, is on high land, is deeply rooted, and if its condition-as when wet-makes it the best electrical conductor of the vicinity at the time of the flash Lightning may set a forest on fire by igniting the tres or--what is much more likely to be the case-the humus about the base.

PINEAPPLE POISONING.

Some perplexing cases of poisoning from eating pineapple have been reported from Hanoi, Indo-China. The nervous system seems to be specially affected, and the symptoms-which may be severe and even falal-begin suddenly, with itching at first, followed by acid eructations, then torpor, heart failure,

face swelling, patches of purple rash on the skin, and perhaps unconsciousness and collapse. The cause is a mystery, a suggestion of the natives being that the fruit has been Hot in- bitten by venomous reptiles. fusion of pino-apple bark is an antidote prescribed, but whether this is effective. or not, it appears that recovery quickly follows the elimination of the poison.
