woman's

Before considering what freedom means to the various departments of art, let us be sure that we first under- staud the actual meaning of the words Woman's Freedom." Woman's freedom does not consist and never will consist raetely in the possession of a vote; there are & great many men possessing vote who are by no means free, largely because they do not value freedom. But if women, when they obtain the vote, value freedom, as many are showing that they value it by their struggle to obtain the vote, then without doubt we shall see in all departments of life and art a new influence showing, itself, different in kind from any influence that has hitherto hold away in our civic life. Freedom for women has a two-fold aspect-outwardly it may be, described as right of way,

a right to enter, without any artificial barriers imposed by the other sex, into all the departments of life, there to test their power and their limitations, with out hindrance and without favour; inwardly it means something deeper and more important, it means a power for storal and spiritual initiative, to the exercise of which "right of way

will only provide the means.

the

Under our present civilisation, and largely owing, as I believe, to the age-long subject of women, society is over-sexed; differentiation of sex has been increased, and sex feeling has been over-accentuated and under-disciplined, because in the so-called duel of ex while Worgan's moral equality has not been recognised women have employed their sex charm as the most effective weapon for compassing their ends, nud men on the whole have wished to have it so. The London magistrate's advice to the wife socking relief against her husband, "by submission rule," really means in ninety- nine case of a hundred, rule by seduction or flattery, and the seduction and flattery of man hy the sex which he had kept more or less within artificial barriers of his own dividing is writ large over the face of history, literature, and art,

are

MAN'S MEAN ADVANTAGE. Hitherto, dating from primitive ages, the woman's need of protection during. the periods of motherhood has been taken advantage of by man for putting her in a place of his own choosing, and there- after for accentuating and making permanent that physical different or dis- advantage which, but for motherhood, Would soarcely exist, and even with motherhood is not noticeable in many native tribes, where the women practically as strong as the men and often do the heavier work. But from the time that social man comes to recognise that the mother, who risks her life in bearing strength to the race, has the moral right not only to protection while she is ful- filling that essential function for the com- munity, but to her freedom after she has fulfilled it the same freedom that a man claims after he has fought for his country-from that time you will get the possibility, at least, of a new freedom for women, which will touch and vitally affect some of the deepest and most press |ing problems of health, race and birth.

Now and then in art there has appeared momentarily the suggestion of something nobler and of more civic value in woman- hood than the mere seductiveness of sex- charms; it shows most noticeably in the work of. Michel Angelo, a painter who, by all necounts, held himself free from the wiles of woman, but who had never- theless a passionate nature and a great social instinct, and the note which Michel- Angelo shows in his work is what I may describe as virile, unsubjugated mother. hood-the mother and the athlote.com- bined in one. Yeb over that great concep tiap broods 'intense melancholy, beesuse the whole world was then so very far away from the_realisation of the artist's dream.

an

In those figures of Michel Angelo there was an element of revolt and of protesi against invisible bonds; and in a good deal of the work of women writers in the past the element of revolt has not been absent, and one of its signs has been definite broaching of subjects which at the time it was thought unfitting for worgen to deal with. I need only name two instances the Brontës and George Eliot, At the time when they wrote certain of their novels which dealt boldly with ques- tions of sex, it was considered something of a scandal that the writers should to Now, clearly when women are WORDON really free it will no longer bo possible to draw any such line, or to deny to the women an equal right to deal freely with those matters which do after all concern them and their children even more deeply than they concern men. I am aware, of course, that many women writers do insist on dealing with them, but there is still an element of disapprobation in some female minds at their presuming to do so.
