THE SECRET OF LIFE.
GERM CELLS FROM OTHER WORLDS.
[BY BIR HIRAM MAXIM.]
The address of the president of the Bri- tish Association regarding the possibility of producing low orders of life artificially is very interesting, and recalls to my mind the events which took place forty- five years ago, when spontaneous genora- tion and Darwin's theory were being hotly discussed by the cleverest men of science in the world, who, euriously enough, at that time were all Britishers.. Shall we ever see their like again't
I am familiar with the experiments of Professor Tyndall and the controversy elating to the origin of life which took place shortly after the Dundee meeting.
It is quite possible that life, as we know it, and every living thing. was derived from a single germ cell produced in a natural way on this planet, but I do not think it is prúbabic.
A LONG JOURNEY. Flammarion tells us that we are right in the centre of the starry universe; that if we should leave this planet and travel in straight line, with the velocity of light, 186,000 miles per second, and con- tinue this speed for a million years, wo should still be in the centre of the starry universe. In this million of years we should, however, lave passed innumer- able suns and planetary systems, many of them inhabited. But he is not satisfied with the first million of years. I quote the following:--
new
"Again a million of years: new revela- tions,
starry splendours, now universes, now verhis, now earths, new hamanities! What! Never an end, no vault, never a sky which stops us, for ever space, for evor the void t Where, then, are we? What road have we surveyed? We are at the restibule of the infinite, We have not advanced a single step. We are always at the same point. The centre is everywhere, the circumference nowhere. Yes, see opened before us the infinite, of We which the study is not yet begun. have seen nothing. We recoil in terror, we fall back astounded, incapable of con- tinuing a uselese career. Well, we might fall, fall in a straight line into the yawn. ing abyss, fall for ever during a whole eternity. Never, never should we reach the hotton, any more than we bave nt- tained the summit. What do I say? Never shall we ever approach it.. The nadir becomes the zenith. Neither above nor below, neither east nor west, neither right nor left. In whatever way we look at the universe, it is infinite in all direc tions. In this infinitudo the associations of suns and of worlds which constitute our visible universe form but an island of a great archipelago, and in the eternity of duration the life of our proud humanity, with all its religions and political history, the whole life of our entire planet is but the dream of a moment."
If we think of a limit to space, we ask ourselves what that limit may be. What is it composed of?. How thick is it, and what is there beyond? How far does it extend? And so on, ad infaitum.
INFINITY,
Flammarion might have gone still fur- ther with his reasoning. He might have said, Let us go back a thousand millions of years, we should still be in the centre of the starry universe, and the state of affairs would be the same as now. Still further, he might have said, Let na go forward, let us advance into the future a thousand millions of years. What shall We find then Exactly the same thing.

Many years ago it occurred to me that life on this planet might have been in troduced by some little living germ that had come to us in the same manner as meteorie dust It is known that these little germs may exist in a dormant state for ages, and be brought to life and activity whenever the conditions are favourable warinth. light, and moisture. But could these germs exist in the intense cold of interstellar space? This was the question, this was my stumbling-block. When, however, the process of making liquid air was discovered, experiments were made, and it was found that the gerins of the lowest fortas of life were not. destroyed by intense cold. Therefore, I think that the chances are much greater that the origin of life on this planet was due to some germ, or germs (and there might have been a vast number of them. of various kinds), received from older worlds.
BUDDHISM,
It is interesting to see how the ancients looked upon this matter. They know nothing of Newton's law. They did, how- ever, know that all matter was animated
If we suspend 1,000 tons at a height that will enable us to walk under it, we shall find that there is not the least ob- struction offered to the passage of any thing between the earth and the weight, and nothing-interposed between will diminish the pull. It will, therefore, be seen that this in- visible, imponderable something that per- vades all Nature is able to exert, a force superior to the resisting power of the hardest materials found in this universe.
