THE BULGARIAN ELIXIR VITAE. The most remarkable longevity is found. in the vicinity of the Balkan Peninsula, and the old-age antidote of Prof. Metchni kolf-supposed to destroy harmful bacteria of the great intestine is a soured milk, containing laetic bacilli, made by the peasants of this region. A report from Consul-General Wm. H. Gale, of Athens, describes this propara- tion.
It is known as Yiaourt"
or Yiaourti," and has been made in Greece since the Turkish occupation in the fifteenth century. It is a favourite summer article of diet of all classes, considered couling and healthful. It is made from either cow's or sheep's milk, which is boiled five or ten minutes, according to the thickness desired, then partially cooled, poured into small jars or cups, and placed in a wooden container called a “dryer." A little old Yinourt-shout 30. grains for & gallon of milk-is next dissolved in a little water, a drop of the solution being placed in each jar with out breaking the scum. The dryer, which |ig air-tight, is closed, and by a charcoal fire is kent at 35deg to 95deg. F. for three and a half hours in summer to five hours in winter. The Yiaourt is then ready for use.
VISIBLE BOUND, Curious luminous circles or arcs, deli- cate and perfect in form, bave been seen over the craters of Vesuvius and Etna- one at each explosion. A study of this strange phenomenon has been made by Frank A. Perret, who has witnessed it hundreds of times, and he conclades that these "flashing arcs," as he calls them, are really sound-waves unde visible for an instant, the rate of propagation-of the images seeming to be about that of sound. The appearance is analogous to the air-waves seen above heated roofs,
HARMLESS BEES.
A variety of becs that can be safely handled, their stings being harmless is claimed by an English apiarist. They are offspring of a Cyprian drone and an Italian queen, and are very active, one hive having produced 200 pounds of honey this year.
PEAT-POWDER FUEL,
That partially dried peat can be collected as powder at less than 25 conts a ton, by doing the work on a large scale, is the view expressed by Dr. J. McWil- liam, who has been experimenting several years near London, Ont. The surface of the bog is broken up with a harrow, the moisture in the loosened material is quickly reduced by sun and wind to 25 to 50 per cent, and the drier portion is then sucked up as powder by a suction If you have Bheumatism, out out the above fan collector, operating like a vacuum Compon and send it to us with your name and address cleaner. Part of the dust proved a cheap and efficient fuel for generating steam, but as it was not all fine enough, and grinding was a troublesome process, its was abandoned for the abundant wond of the locality. IMPROVED PHOTO-TELEGRAPHY. In the practical work of transmitting photography by telegraph from Southern France to the Paris morning papers. the selenium cell of the Korn apparatus has been dropped. It appears that the modified process uses films of etched gelatine mounted on copper, ruled parallel lines like those of a half-tone being added for better effect in printing, and the copper-backed photograph is fitted around a cylinder. As this is rotated, a metal point moves over the aur. face in a spiral course. Wherever the point touches the copper it completes an electric circuit,but-the-current-in-inter-- rupted by the gelatine of the thicker parts of the picture. At the receiving end a second cylinder is rotated in a dark box in exact unison with the transmitting cylinder. This second cylinder carries a photographic film, and receives a beam
