ever they may do themselves. Children are not independent of fashion, but certainly they are not dependent on it, leal torture may be inflicted on sensitive child by dressing her out-of-date and clumsy garments when all her school-follows are daintily clothed. But what are wanted are not up-to-date things, but simple and pretty things. The rise of the knitted ecat for adults has led directly to the use of knitted suits for children. They are very com fortable, very warm, and as durable as anything can be that is submitted to the extreme chances of a child's day. For very small boys little knickers and jerseys of knitted wool are the most practical of garments, especially for fat little boys, who will come through any non-elastic fabric much quicker than they will come through knitted wool. For little girls knitted jerseys worn over short cloth or serge skirts save a great deal of trouble,. particularly in the sewing line, as they are practically without fasteninge; and all children, and most men, seem to have a vendetta against buttons.

It is a temptation, of course, to the mothers of pretty children to dress them in diaphanong muslins, frilled with lace. The temptation, if yielded to, proves its A generation ago own punishment mothers persisted in this, and black were those days for the child when the best frock was produced, and with it came thr dreadful consciousness that once on, it meant something inuch worse than Sun- day. In these days, however, wo pride ourselves on understanding children, and consequently it is quite easy to avoid the over-claborate models on the market. and to and sufficiently dainty garments for any occasion which are not overs frilled. One of the most practical adorn- ments for a little girl's frock is broderie Anglaise, particularly when hand-done. This kind of needlework is very strong.

In the country house this season during laundress. The cheap machine-made stuff a spell of wet weather it sometimes re sold in the shops is, of course, less lieves the monotony of the day while the durable than plain material, but hand- men are out shooting to get up an im- worked broderie actually strengthens the promptu afternoon party, and this kind stuff on which it is done. A whole gown of easy and intimate affair allows of of this work is as festive as anybody frocks which, although they should not need want, even for the most picturesque be elaborate, may be quite bright in of children. Another good material is washing silk; not the thin Japanese kind, colour, varying from the tea-gown to more orthodox garments. A pretty brunette on such an occasion last week was wearing a gown of yellowish flame- coloured velvet, of the shade one sees in some dahlias. It was voiled with reddish- brown ninon, which at the hom drawn into a broad band of dull gold Japanese lace on a ground of brown silk, This Japanese lace has the advantage that one can dye it to any colour while preserving the gold of the tracery as it is. The brown ninon, which was full and arranged in flat pleats, continued over the bodice, where it drew aside in a long V., bordered in soft brown marabout, to show the velvet beneath, and this in its turn was partly hidden beneath a jabot of the Japanese lace. The belt was of pale blue folded silk, and had sash-ends at the back embroidered in bright colours.

but the thick non-transparent sort.

A PRETTY FROCK,

The question of party frocks is one with a tragic past. Too many of these little garments are designed to make the wearer look nice and the mother feel proud. without a thought of the existence of such games as blind-raau's-buff and hunt. the-slipper. It is all very well to spend eight or nine guinces on a drass of ecru lace over pale blue chiffon over pink satin, but when that dress has caught in a nail and ripped itself in a wholly unmendable fashion, the evening's hap- piness has been even more badly injured A very for the weurer of the frock. pretty little party frock not open to this objection is of thick crear corded silk of the old-fashioned kind, which is still to be bad by searching such shops have "long-established county connection."

1

It is trimmed round the hem with three little kilted frills of satin with a very high shoon on it. These frills are curved round in seroll fashion at either side of the front breadth. The rather high- waisted bodice is also adorned with little kilted frills. It is cut away for an inch or two from the base of the neck, and a Bubbles frill of white lisse turns saitly back. This dress is very pretty and very dainty, but it has the cardinal advantage of being in itself almost indestructible, the only perishable parts being those which can be easily and inexpensively renewed.

SILVER AND BORE.

Another pretty frock for a young girl

is of white spotted India muslin, thin The but strong, over pale pink silk. muslin is threaded with pink satin ribbon downwards from the waist to the knee, where each time of ribbon ends in a small loop. A little cost of pink silk is drawn. in round the waist with a sash of silver, matching the silver hair-ribbon.

Very convenient and charming are the one-piece ready-made stuff frocks which are to be seen in the shop windows just now, and those who do not wear ready- made things may well find useful suggestions in the study of these little gowns for to catch the ready-made public novelties of colour and design have to be considered. A case in point is that of a brown tweed, one-piece frock of the colour a cigar with a black plaid of black stripe running through it. The skirt has a simulated fastening up the loft front seam, whore a line of black satin ribbon studded with buttons made of a Jamai- can seed, which is scarlet with a black top, runs from hem to waist. For eight 66 inches from the hem the seam is split up showing a pleating of black satin.
