A WIDOW'S SUCCESSES.
Mak Ying, otherwise Mak Yiog Kec, described as a widow, junk owner, and coolio contractor, was the defendant in four actions.
The first case called was an action brought by Wong Wing Sap, a carpenter, of Kowloon, who was represented by Mr. II. K. Holmes. It was a claim for $300, money lent and duo under an acknow- | ledgment note,
Mr. D. Lewis defended in all the cases. Mr. Holmes anid he had not seen his client since the return day named in the writ. Fle was not prepared to go on with the case, then.
Mr. Lewis asked for judgment, for the defendant, with costs.
Mr. Otto Kong Sing asked Mr. Holmes whether ho bad ever seen his client per- sonally.
Mr. Holmes said his position was that kince the return day of the writ he had not seen bis client. Ho might have a proper excuse, in which case he would make an application later.
The second action was a claim by Wong Wing, trader, for when Mr. Otto Kong Sing appeared, for 8224, money lent and interest.
Mr. Kong Bing briefly detailed the nature of the claim, and called the plain- tiff.

Mr. Lewis said his client absolutely denied ever borrowing the money. Plain tiff had brought thres other plain tiffs to bring actions against his client on promissory notes which he had handed them,
His Lordship gare judgment for the defendant and as neither the plaintiffs nor the aplicitors appeared in the other two actions, judgment was also given for the defendant.

I have just seen the girls from a fam ous school going back from their holidays. Cab after cab drove past, three or four in each. There seemed to me to be hun- dreds of them and they were the plainest lot of girls I ever saw.
The first few struck me as unusually hard of fenture. They lacked that deli- cate bright bloom which one looks for in young girls. I studied the reat carefully. Nearly all belonged to the same type; their cheeks were weather-beaten, their hair was dragged back under their bard atraw hats, just like boys' hats, with the This gave them an un- school ribbon. natural uniformity of appearance: at least it seems to me unnatural that girls should be brought up to look alike, in- stead of being encouraged each to develop the charm which Nature has given her. I am sure that these girls had charm enough. Many have generations of high bred, exquisite women behind them. Most are the daughters of charming mothers.
