ALCE COPPRIL.

The surface films or patinas that forta on copper and copper alloys give a variety of decorative colours, but have been facking in blue, and it was while seking a true blue patina that the curious properties of what they call gelatine-copper" were discovered by Profs. W. D. Bancroft and T. R. Briggs, of Cornell University. This substance is a pale brown deposit of copper and gelatin that forms on the negative electrode when a solution of copper acetate containing gelatine is electrolyzed five minutes at room temperature between two plates of copper or other metal. When a plate conted with gelatine-copper was placed in a five per cent copper actate solution containing no gelatine, striking results followed, and a series of markable colour changes ended in the production of a magnificent deep blue. This process was termed development," from its resemblance to the bringing out f the silver image in a photograph. At about 120deg. F., the electrolylic deposit was bright red or brick red, and was not affected by the developing solution; and at 130deg. to 140deg, a very thin, rather. iridescent golden film was formed, that could be preserved by lacquering. The colour changes from the developer are attributed to surface absorption hydrous copper oxide.

In the sheep breeding experiments of Dr. A. G. Bell, carried on since 1890 at his summer home at Beinn Bhreagh, Cape Breton, the aim has been to increase both the number of twins and the capacity of

ewes to feed their young. Sheep, as rule, have two nipples. By selection a four-aippled breed has been quickly developed, presumably with greater milk- producing powers; and a six-aippled variety is far advanced, although a six- nippled sleep was lately a great rarity. Of lambs born, 36 per cent." are twins, with a prospect of a rapid gain in the ratic,

OUR COMET DUST.

The coronas often seen around the moON since May, 1913, are attributed to dust from the tail of Halley's Comet, by M. Marchand, of the Picdu Midi Observa- tory. The computed size of the particles has decreased, until they are no more than one fifty thousandth of an inch.

A GREAT CHACK IN THE EARTH. The new theory of the Himalayas advanced by Col. S. G. Burrard, Surveyor-General of India, is that the

uass was forced up in the formation of a great earth-rift, which can still be traced. Anomalies in the gravity indications of both pendulum and plumb-line have per Plexed geodasists, and the deflections of the line have not only been sometimes away from the great mountain reass, but have seemed to prove the existence of subterranean rocks of great density ex- tending east and west across India near latitude 23dog north. Between those subterrarian rocks and the Himalayas

INDICATING SOUND DIRECTION.

1t

The sound-locating apparatus worked out on the English coast, by W. & G. Hodgkinson, for determining the direc. tion of sounds at sea, has been given tho form of a drum niue feet in diameter, with sixteen receiving mouths. Reeds connected to relays are placed at the base of the mouths, and when these reeds are vibrated by sound waves they close an electric circuit, lighting one of several the lamps on an indicator. In use, apparatus is suspended high above the deck, away from interference-from-sounds on board. When a sound is received from a source near at hand, the vibrations are so spread out that they cause more than

WINE FROM CHERRIES.

A means of utilizing the 20,000 to 60,000 tons of cherries annually lost in France from lack of transportation facilities is proposed by P. Carles. Cherries and other garden fruits do not readily yield wines, but it is found that the difficulty may be very simply, overcome by making up their deficiency in tartaric acid. Fermentation then proteods satie- factorily, as with grapes..
