SHIPPING IN PORY.

Later news from the Philippines show that the situation in the Province of Cebu, which was visited by a disastrous typhoon on the 16th instant, is not quite a serious as at first feared, but the loss of life is very extensive. Á telegram to the Manila Times on October 21at states that the estimate of the total killed throughout the Visayas in the typhoon is 1,000 persona,

Thirty-seven craft of all kinds either went down or were badly damaged in the neighbourhood of Ceba

According to several people who rode out the storm on the steamer Kaifong, which arrived on Sunday morning, the typhoon reached its full force on Tuesday evening. Those on the ship could make out helpless craft driven past them in the terrible fury of the sea, but they could offer no aid. The sen rose until it swamped the city, and for half a mile inland ran like a flood. Observers de- scribe the city as looking like a split box of giant matches. Half of the buildings were destroyed, and the plight of the people was pitiful to behold,

Whilst on its way from Wyndham, Australia, to Manila the steamer Kon Kon Maru (Captain Yamamoto) was over- NE. winds, freshening; fine till morning, taken by the typhoon while passing then rainy and equally.

of chief engineer Jose Herrero, the Tayabas, whose home port is Iloilo, was on its way from Cebu to Iloilo when over- taken by the approaching typhoon and forced to seek shelter at San Carlos on the case coast of Negros, arriving there Tuesday forenoon. Notwithstanding the fact that the Tayabas had two anchors down and was running full speed ahead the force of the terrible seas slowly dragged her towards the shore, and Per Den of Glamis, from Shanghai, realizing the dangerous position of the Mr. N. H, Sow.. vessel, Captain Antonio Tapia, the Per Johanne, from Haiphong, Mr. Bra master, told Captain Vicente Aldeguer, ofier and Mr. Schornburg. the Royer Poizat, who had also anchored at Ban Carlos, that he would run to Escalante, where he would be able to obtain more secure shelter in the river. However, not reaching Escalante until seven o'clock in the evening after a heroic fight against winds and seas, he arrived too late to be able to enter the river It was pitch dark and the driving-rain-and raging seas threatened to swamp the little craft. Unable to stand up against the seas which soon began to break in over the rail amidship, the water slowly fill ing the engine-room and holds, the little steamer was gradually settling until one huge wave completely flooded her, The vessel never rose again, going down box first.

Captain Antonio Tapis, chief engineer the assistant engineer, Remigio de la Cruz, together with four Americans and a number of Filipinos went down with the ill-fated craft. The dead bodies of Miss Lambert, three women and one child and those of four men had been recover. ed when chief engineer Herrera left Escalanto.
