HOME AUTUMN COATS.

Brown and wine-colour are having it their own way in Paris. Wine-colour is, of course, rather a wide term. It may mean a deep reddish purple, or it may mean a bluish shade rather like very dark There, is a sweet pea called mauve. Black Prince, and a certain cactus dahlia witli a kind of lim silver bloom upon it, in a marvellous tone of the darkest ruby, is somewhat of the same tone. This is, perhaps, the smartest for an autumn ostume, especially in velvet.

A very beautiful afternoon coat and skirt in velvet of this dusky hue lias a plain skirt apparently fastening down the loft front scam with motifs of braid in the same tone. The seam is slit up showing a panel not more than an inch and a half wide, of slightly redder pleated taffetas, on which a veritable line of very small buttons covered in green silk is arranged. The coat opens over a waistcoat of the slightly brighter taffetas, which is brocad ed with little clumps of flowers in the clear green. A fall of old lace at the neck from a high Mechlin net collar is repouted in dainty ruffles at the wrists. The toque made of the velvet is trimmed with cluster and aigrette of coctua "dahlins in several shades, including one spray in the exact colouring of the gown, With this is worn a rather, smail stolo of

LONG. VELVET WRAPS,

Velvet and velveteen are to be used again this autumn and winter in the com position of comfortable and handsome outer wraps. These have many points of usefulness which fully accounted for their great popularity last year and in the spring. They are, however, only suitable for wearing over short skirts which do not need kolding up, and even so they are apt to be in the way on maddy days, for it is very difficult to cleanse mud-stains from velvet. On the other hand, they frequently save the trouble of changing dress, since they land a sufficiently afternoon appearance to the figure even who they are worn over comparatively plain costumes. They also form an ad- mirable background for furs, with a glimpse of thee at the throat. A smart model has a turned-back collar of sailor shape not extended in long revers to the waist, hich forms a pleasant change, On the waist-line it is fastened by a motif of folded black velvet and braid, and to this fastening it is drawn slightly up in fullness from the right to the left side, This gives it a very up-to-date air, for anybody who has the patience to be etsinally brushing. The folds of velvet are the finest dust traps imaginable.

NOTICE TO CONSIGNEES.

The picture frock is heralded again, The frock of the fichu, the tight gathered sleeve, and the bodico coming up in a point to the fichu and going down in a point below the waist over a pleated skirt with a plain front panel. So far so good, but the annoying thing is the way THE Steamship in which this charming style is tortured in order to make it novel. In one in since the whole of the fullness of the sides and back is drawn round to a clump in the middle of the front, well above the knoes, the front breadth itself being

These promise to be rather Hoppy and superabundant, as to the shoulders and slceres, even while they remain narrow in the skirt, a rather impractical mixture They are ent kimono fashion on the shoulders, which entails a great deal of looseness about the upperpart of the gar- ment, and when an onormous fold- ellar of bear or fox or sable is added/ched up into the same gathering of Kowloon Wharf and Godown Company, Ltd.,

and two cuffs, each like a granny muff, are piaced at the end of the sleeves, the general effect is more of rich amplitude thas of smartness. Such a coat can only reasonably be worn over evening dress or with a very large hat. A small one shows

to much the lack of proportion be tween shoulders and head. An attempt at carrying out the draped skirt idea in fur coats is made now and then. Perhaps broad-tail is the only kind of fur in which this could be successfully done. In seal or musquash it is bulky, while in the hairier furs the effect is merely grotesque.

The period at which bunched together round the human form these velvet and cloth mixtures were was the period in which almost exactly the same arrangement was fashionable round fireplaces and windows. The red- zons for fighting against this revival are consequently three.
