NAPOLEON'S VILLA IN BA
ཡ--ནཾ– ས
Napoleon's villa on the Island of Elba as sold last month by auction under in- structions from the Tribunal of Porto Longone. The purchaser is Prince tamillo Ruspol, of Rome, who offered, £12,000. Among the conditions of sate
an obligation on the part of the pur chaser to maintain the villa in proper order and to preserve all the souvenirs of Napoleon, including the furniture of his time.
M. Frédéric Masson, the well-know authority on the domestic life of Nap oleon, has given to the Temps somo inter- esting information on Napoleon's vilia and estate of San Martino. His general conclusions are that, if the Emperor ever lived in the vills, it can only have been for a few weeks, and that with regard to the so-called "museum" the authenticity of any relics of the Emperor which it may contain is highly doubtful.

A DOG'S INSTINCT
"E. Colh Exon." writes to the Times :-- "In your leading article dealing with the weather and instinct in the issue of August 29 a phenomenon seems to be put out of court which could perhaps be paralleled, and is, I believe, incon- trovertible. A friend of mine was riding on the top of an Oxford tram when a dog, also on the top, began to howl dismally. The tram was shortly-stopped, and ho Tearnt that a passenger had suddenly and quietly expired. There was no sign of anything voueual evident to the outside passengers. My friend was a grūduate in honours and M.A."
CIGARS FOR WOMEN.
Chicago women smokers are said to be smoking cigars instead of cigarettes. Mr. CIngersoll, of the Stratford Hotel in that city, states that women have been smoking cigara thern for a long time.. "I get many orders from women. Usually they choose a brand costing two for a shilling and select them as men do, either black and strong, or light, according to taste. They do not use a cigar holder." From another Chicago hotel it is stated that the sale of cigars to women is large- |ly increasing."Bometimes they say the
cigars are for a husband or brother, said an attendant, "but we find that inen do not send their womenfolk to buy their cigars."

INDIA AND SELF-GOVERNMENT. A GIRL'S GIFT TO A "QUERN. Among curious gifts which have greatly pleased Royal récipients was a splendid plumcake sent to Queen Wilhelmina on. her birthday by a little girl of twelve whose name was also Wilhelmina, and whose birthday fell upon the same day as the Queen's. Queen Wilhelmina not only accepted the present, but sent the donor a photograph of herself, inscribed "From Wilhelmina to Wilhelmina, on her twelfth birthday.”
THE MASTER MAN,
br William Waugh, one of the fore- most neurologists in America, and chief physician of Jefferson Hospital, Chicago, declares in an interview that woman nowadays still adores “The Cave Man,” who, as it were, knocks his chosen mate over the head with a hatchet and drags her off to his cave. Dr. Waugh says the most successfully married men of to-day hark back to primitive conditions and impulsos. To live happily though married Dr. Waugh lays down the follow- ing rules for men :----
When you find a mate, take her, she
wants it,
When you have her, live for her; she
wants that.
When she arouses your jealousy, beat her;
sho noods it.
If she betrays you, kill her; she deserves
it...
"The simple maxime that ruled the cave dwellers govern humanity - to-day." De Waugh asserts: Every woman sits and waits for the coming of her lord. She is ready to follow when he beckons.. He is masterful. He woos not, besesches not, implores not, served not; he takes his own when he finds ite commands, knowing that he will be obeyed, and that is the sign for which she waits. There a never man or brute so brutal but woman
ings to him, and the bigger the brute. the more this instinct shows. itself among. women, who flock to decorate a murderer's cell with evidences of their appreciation. It is not silliness, not maudlin; but primitivo instincts showing through the
veneer,"

WOMEN'S GREATEST MISFORTUNE.
The old saying that "distance lends enchantment" was never more aptly to the point than when applied to those people whose breath is laden with evil smelling odours. Many persons appear most attractive at a distance, but produce a feeling of pity and disgust when close to because of the condition of their breath. For instance, it makes little difference how beautiful a woman may be, or how charming her
manner if her breath is foul, her charm is gone and she is at a dis advantage when ever she comes in contact with other people, Foul breath in women arouses in mari a feeling of repugnance and a desire to get out of the company of such a woman as quickly as possible, and epen women will avoid her. It is therefore important for every woman who values her personal attraction to take such care of herself that this yhpleasant and unnecessary complaint is avoided or corrected. Men, wonten and children who are troubled with this complaint will drive their friends away more rapidly than any other affliction, People do not realise their breathis are bad because they are like those who are constantly employed among paints and varnishes--they get used to what is to others a most offensive smell. In nearly all cases this condition-is due to Constipation and a disordered Stomach, and a coated Tongue, slight Headache, and feverishness are the sure signs that the digestive organs are retaining quantities of impurities from which the system should be free, thereby causing the Breath to become charged with the foul odour. In Dr.. Morses' Indian Root Pills there will be found a scarching, cleansing remedy which will drive the masses of decaying corruption-that poison the Blood and contaminate the breath from the system through the regular channels. They get at the cause as no other remedy does. They get at the the foundation of the complaint. They give you clean bowels, a healthy stomach, a lively liver, and blood that is rich and red. They are safe, sure and reliable remedy, and will prevent many of the complaints so common if taken once or twice a week to keep the system in a healthy condition. They are purely vegetable, and their action is not accompanied by any nauscous or griping sensation, but is mild and gentle.
