SCIENTIFIC MISCELLANY,

LIGHTNING-RISK OF MOUNTAIN

·OBSERVATORIES.

THE HONGKONG DAILY PRESS, TUESDAY OCTOBER 1ST, 1912.

The protection from lightning of build- ings on high mountains is a difficult problem, and when the building is on deep snow no protective device yet known can give security, for the reason that snow and frozen soil conduct electricity: ro poorly that they give no grounding for lightning conductors, Recent in- stauces of mountain observatories that have been struck by lightning, with much damage to instruments and danger to occupauts, have been collected by J. Vallot, a French physicist. In one case, there were no lightning conductors, but the wooden building was sunk into the snow. Que observatory on snow was con- nected to a bare rock earthing 100 yards away by cables, which proved insufficient to carry away the large amount of electricity passing in the lightning. An example of good protection

This has on the roof four mintually-connected, multi. pointed lightning conductors, such con- nected with the rock by a quarter inch iron wire ending in a coil, and the whole building is encased with thin copper plates, connected to the lightning con ductors and to the stovepipe. or to a compression of air entrapped in openings struck by the water. In the experiments made it was assumed that the striking wave has a maximum velocity of 80 feet per second It was found that this would give a maximum internal hydrostatic pressure-like thet of a bydrostatic press-of about 2.9 tome per square foot; and that it night cause-a- pressure from the enclosed air of about

tons per square foot: The experiment proved, however, that a vastly greatei |forco might be present-that of water- hammer action, such as is sometimes noticed when the flow of water through a long pipe is suddenly stopped at the open end. This would occur under special conditions only, but it was shown that the impact upon an open joint of a ware of the stated velocity might set up a water-hammer action of 40 tons per square foot, or even more. It was suggested that wall exposed to wayps should have drains or openings on the inner side to prevent excessive water, air or water-hammer compression.

FRUIT-RIPEKING IN OVENU.

The artificial ripening of dates, us developed by Prof. George Freeman of the University of Arizona, promises to overcome a serious drawback of date culture in the desert region of the South-western United States. The crop often fails from imperfect ripening, but |by picking the fruit as it begins to ripen, washing, and placing in a large metal oven for three days, the ripening process is completed in a perfect manner.

The leven, supplied with plenty of moisture, is kept at a temperature of aliout 122dog. F. The process has been made inexpen- sive, and the dates are claimed to be. superior in plumpness and. flavoár.

RADIUM TINUNG OF GLASS, When glass tubing is exposed six months to tropical sunlight, some speci- mens turn to a deep amethyst tiut, others are darkened or blached, and some are unaffected. W. A. D. Badge, az Eöglish experimenter, finds that radium salts have the same effect, but give a deeper colouration. Some change in the man- ganese oxide of the glass is supposed top give the colour alteration.

A NEW SEA-DANGER.

A marine disaster of curious origin la recorded by a recent British Board of Trade report. Some months ago the steamship Hardy had in its cargo a large quantity of metallic sodium and chlorate of potash the formur, as is well known, taking fire and burning in water, while the latter is so energetic an oxidizer that it e liable to explode violently when heated in the presence of combustible matter. As an extra precaution against trouble these dangerous substances were carried on deck. This proved an up fortunate mistake, however, for a heary ses burst open the chests containing two tons of sodium, which in a few minutes set fire to the vessel in many places. As the flames reached the chlorats of molash, a violent explosion broke the slip in two, finishing the destruction. The misdirect- d efforts to ensure safety were blained for the loss, and it was concluded that the cago would have been quile safe if the sodium had bien properly packed and stowed below deck,
