THE INDIAN GOVERNMENT AND

SILVER

* IN VAIN 19 THE NËT SPREAD IN SIGHT OF THE BIRD,"

We subjoin extracts taken from Messrs. Samuel, Montagu & Co.'s circular, datad August 22nd:-

The steamers to Bombay and Calcutta this week will take £750,000 in har silver, on account of the Indian Government. It is understood that this will be followed by-further shipments, the probable re- quirements for silver coinage in the im- inediate future having been anticipated

by purchases effected at the lower prices ruling some time ago.

A knowledge of those facts effectually disposes of any necessity for counting the Indian Government a factor in the market, and the situation which results is full of interest. For months past huge accumulations of silver have been offected with the object of unloading them upon the Indian Government at greatly on- hanced prices. The quotation "In vain is the net, spread in the sight of any bird" appears singularly apposite, for the Indian Government has shown its ability to buy as much silver as it may find necessary without any outsido as Bistance.

The problem as to what is to becoma of the stock acquired by the speculative group, now still awaits wolution. A sua picion had been created by the size of tho shipment to India the week before last that the Indian

ian Government had om barked on the purchase of silver-a sus- day picion which increased from day to

until at last the Indian speculative group conceived the ides of cornering ing delivery and thus placing the Indian Government in a quandary, both as to price and supplics.

whatever purchases the Indian Govern ment had made in past months, it had now ceased to be a buyer, and cash silver was quoted only 28 11/18d., at a pro- num of but 1/160. over forward do- livery. On the 20th inst. China came in as a seller, causing the price to fall to 20. for cash and 29hd. for two months delivery.

Silver was taken readily at these rates for the Indian bazaars. The demand continued next day for the sans quarter, where speculation seemed rather keen, probably on account of the issue of the Indian Currency Return showing a fall in the total of silver rupece of 118 Ints (the gold total has fallen 17 lacs); and prices advanced 3/16 for cash and for two months' delivery. To-day a reaction set in, and prices fell to 28 11/164, for spot and 28 9/16d. for for- ward delivery,

The stock in Bombay has increases from £1,000,000 to £1,710,000; the off-take is reduced from 65 to 45 bars a day. Shanghai reports a reduction in its stock of bars and sycee from £4,150,000 to £4,075,000; over £100,000 of silver and syceo will arrive this wook from China,

THE VICE CHANCELLORSHIP OF SHEFFIELD UNIVERSITY.

The rumour is revived that Sir Robert Morant, chairman of the Insurance Com arission (England) may succeed Sir Charles Norton Eliot as Vice-Chancellor of Sheffield University, Bir Charice having resigned on his acceptance of the principalship of Hongkong University. jt

may be recalled, says a London contem porary, that when still fresh from the eventually came to be tutor to the Royal University he went out to Siam, and family. In this position he revealed un- expected strength of character in a man of his yeara. In order that he might make Prince, who was placed in his charge, his influence effective upon the young he prevailed upon the King to send him to five with him instead of be, the tutor, residing in the Royal Palace; and ho ruled him with a firmu, but kindly, hand, even returning presents forwarded by the Queen to her son when he considered them unsuitable. The most cordial ro- lations between the King and the tutor soon sprang up, and Mr. Morant, as he wns then, became charged with the difficult task of organising the educa tional system of the State. He eventual- ly exercised oven a wider influence over the administration of the country, and came to be known as the uncrowned King." His position naturally aroused considerable jealousy, and at last, but not before he had left a deep impress on the history of Siam, he decided to ralin- quish his position and to return to England.
