A CHINESE ROMAN CATHEDRAL

PRIEST HONOURED.

To honour the Rev. Father Andrew Leong on the occasion of the golden jubilee of his priesthood, a solerin service was 'celebrated at the Roman Cathedral, Hongkong, on Thursday.

The Church was beautifully decorated with festoons and pot flowers. The Rev. Father Leong celebrated soleun mass with the assistance of Bishop Pozzoni, the local European and Chinese Clergy.

H.E. Mr. Cloud Severo, accompanied by Captain Sirason, kindly assisted at the service. fle was conducted to bis reserved seat by Rev. Father Spade and Cher. The Yat. "The pupils of St. Joseph », College and Father Grompa and Mr. Osmund were in the choir accompanied by ho organist Mr. Baptista.

After the Gospel, the Rev. Father Waag from Canton delivered an eloquent aarmon on the fifty years of work of Father Leong and his zeal in teaching his countrymen the organist, Mr. Baptista.

After the service the Rev. Futher re- ceived the congratulations of all and Rev Bishop Pozzoni with his missionaries presented to him an address with a richly bound Breviary. The Chinese students of St. Joseph's College headed by their teachers and the Rev. Brother Director, presented also an illuminated addross of congratulation, to which Father Leong replied thanking them and expressing the hope that all though not ret Christians would study the Catholic religion which rought civilization to Europe and would also ennoble China and teach her sons how to be happy in this work and in the next.

By diligence and perseverance in his studios, at the age

of 23 years, he qualified for the examinations and was ordained priest in Holy Orders on the 25th April, 1862. From that time onward he has been employed in the missionary field successively in the districts of Sun-On Hoi-fung and Kwai shin, where his unflagging zeal, earnest devotion to duty and great tact won for him thỏ esteem of the numerous converts whom he brought within the fold. For his exceptional services, Father Leong had conferred upon him by the Holy See, the title of Missionarius Apostolicus." think he is the only Chinese priest in the Far East to hold the title. I can speak of his great worth as a valuable coadjutor, for in my early years on the. Mainland, Father Leong, who shepherded his dock so zealously, guided me also in the ways and customs of the people whom we have since found it a rare privilege to help in the service of Christ. It was in 1833 that Father Leong was transferred to Hong- kong: He has remained ever since the Pastor of the Chinese Catholic Community. is extremely gratify- ing to ne to hear from you to-day that the example and teaching your spiritual guide has borne such good fruit in your imbibing the spirit of true Christianity in the practice of the virtues of humility and self-restraint. At no time, I think, in the history of your great nation, more than the present have you to show by example rather than pre- cept that the faith and doctrines of our Holy Mother the Church will have an abiding influence for the goor of your country, and people. Gentlemen, allow me again to thank you very cordially for your assurances of respect and obedience to our Holy Father to whom it will be my pleasure and duty to forward an Account of the extremely gratifying ceremony which I and the Catholic Clergy are attending to-day invitation.

Mr. LAU Po proposed the toast of His Lordship the Bishop and said

My Lord and Gentlemen-I have been honoured by the Chinese Catholic Con- munity of Hongkong to say a few words on their behalf on the present auspicious Occasion of the Golden Jubilee of the priesthood of the Rev. Father Leong Tze Hing I have not been charged to extol the virtues and merits of cur honoured guest. That duty pertains to Chov. Tse Yat. But what I have been asked to say fa to pay our respect and humble homage to your Lordship as the worthy repre- sentative in this British Colony of our Holy Father, His Highness The Pope. Since the day of Father Leong's ordina- tion the Chinese have passed through periods that have called for a great deal of self-restraint and at no time more than the past few months have we felt and learnt the value of our Catholic education.

influence of the teaching of our Holy Mother the Church we have been trained to discipline and obedience which in times of stress and upheaval call for the exercise of moral control. We owe all this and more to the good Fathers who, in obedience to God's Mandate, have gone forth to preach the Gospel in every land By the establishment of places of worship, convents and schools, in China, the Roman Catholic Missionaries have raised the moral and intellectual status of the Sat., 27th April, Noon. people, while the preaching of the Gospel has set them on the path of progress and righteousness, In this great work your Lordship has borne a prominent part, and to this your twenty years of arduous missionary work in China and seven in Hongkong bear ample testimony. We thank your Lordship therefore for your zeal and devotedness on our behalf, and it is to you and the missionaries working under you by divine Providence that we owe in great measure our welfare and prosperity at the present day. We pray that the Lord may spare you to us for many years to come and grant you health and strength and courage to continue your noble and self-sacrificing work

BAILING DAT

The excellent qualities of this article which are advertised in to-day's issue have already we are informed "acquired for it high repute and great appreciation The slates AcÒ throughout the world. made exclusively from Asbestos and Port- and Cement and rank foremost among all building materials on account of their security against fire, their weather-

stability of volume, their sound-mutiling and insulating capacities and their power of resistance against acidiferous atmos phere and vapours. Asbestos-L'ement Blates are used for roofing as well as for covering walls and ceilings. They con bine all the merits of natural and artificial products used for the same purposes without having their disadvantages and may thus be regarded as an ideal roofing and building material. Its lightness of weight, incombustibleness, waterproof quality and bad heat conducting capacity have secured for Asbestos-Slates a very extensive use for building and fire proof purposes, for insulating electricity, heat and cold. As roofing it has particularly stood the test in an exceedingly satisfac tory manner while under the influence of the tropical scorching heat of the sun, displacing natural slates on account of their high prices also tiles or corrugated sheet-iron owing to the serious dis- advantages attaching to these. In recent times Asbestos-Cement Slates have also frequently come into use for school, houses, hospitals, tropical, buildings, airship-balls, warehouses and automobil garnges. In the circumstance it seemas opportune' to call the special attention of building contractors in this district to the ideal kind of roofing material.

WEATHER REPORT

BISHOP POZZONI in responding to the toast, soid:-Mr. Lau Po and Gentlemen- It is no mere formal phraseology when I say that the present is a peculiarly auspicious occasion in the History of the Catholic Church in China. In rising, therefore, to thank you, Sir, as the spokesman of the Chinese Catholics in Hongkong, I do so with unfeigned i pleasure. The pleasure in all the greater in that I am able to announce that His Valley yesterday, tas spread northwards to the Holiness the Pope has been graciously pleased to transmit his blessing and con- gratulations to Father Leong on his Golden Jubilee. I will proceed to read the telegram which I have received from the Cardinal of the Propaganda Fide. It is in the following terms

this mark of His Holiness' favour in the light of his high appreciation of a mis- sionary who has devoted fifty long years in the service of God among his own fellow-countrymen. It is not in the gift of all to be able to claim the distinctions which mark the career of the guest, in honouring whom we honour ourselves. Born in the village of Leong Tin, in the district of Nam-Hoi, near Canton, at the age of fourteen years Andrew Leong joined the Cathedral Seminary at Hong- kong as the first and only cleric student.
