This car- bohydrate proves to be the chief fuel, the fat being quite unimportant. INCREASE IN LONGEVITY. Life is not growing shorter, but Dr. O. H. Howe, Massachusetts physician, finds

that the world's statistics indicate a steady lengthening for 350 years, with a present rate of increase greater than ever before. Records for Geneva show an average increase in the average age of all deaths from 21.2 years in the 18th cen- tury to 30.7 years in the 18th. In Mas- sachusetts life is now lengthening about 14 years in a century, the average longth at this time being about 45 years; in Europe the increase per century is about 17 years, and in Prussia, the land of medi

27 years. In India, which has neglected medical science, the life span has remain- ed stationary at only about 25 years. The lengthening of life in Massachusetts has been promoted by the diminution of infant mortality, by the almost completo disap- pearance of small-pox, and by the lesson- ing of the mortality from scarlet fever and especially from diphtheria to a small frac- tion of what it was a few years ago. Con tinued study of disease germs, of which the number has increased in 25 years from only two to between 20 and 30 now known, will further lengthen life. Modern condi- tions, however, partially offset the bene ficent work of medicine, and Massachu- setts statistics show five times as many deaths-from heart disease in 1895 as in 1850, with Bright's disease and other -kidney disorders and cancer more than

A MUSIC RECORDER.

An electrical muste recording apparatus, invented 且 score of years ago by a Swedish engineer, has been lately put into practical form by a Stockholm firm. The "Melograph," as it is called, is attached to a piano, organ or other keyed instru- ment, and as the instrument is played in the usual way the attachment registers the tune on a music-ruled, chemically-pre- pared ribbon, having a war-like coating. The record may be used for a phonograph-. like reproduction, or the impression can be read off and transcribed in ordinary musical notes.
