The availability of yeast as a food is a problem upon which the Berlin Institute for Fermentation Industries is now work. ing More than 70,000 tons of yeast annually are produced by the German breweries, and, as most of this is wasts; its use as food is economically desirable. A number of yeast preparations now ou the market would seem to be well adapted for food. The dried reast keeps indefinitely, the large proportion protein makes it one of the cheapest of foods, and the bitter taste can be removed by sodium carbonate. Two chemists of the Institute have found that the dry yeast contains about two and a half times as much protein as beef, with a full value (2,000 calories per pound) more than three times that of beef. Doge fed with large quantities of yeast seemed to thrive, while more than 87 per cent of the nitrogen was assimilated; and some employes of the Instituto substituted two-thirds of an

TRAPS FOR MOTHS.

While fighters of the gipay and brown tail moths in Massachusetts have been seeking some fatal parasite, two Egyptian entomologists, Andres and Maire, have been working to produce an effective and economical trap for such pests. The first trials showed that the injurious moths of the cotton fields could be attracted from a considerable distance of cloths soaked

in the strong-scented fermented liquids of which they are fond.

A similar trap is being tested in French vineyards, and elsewhere in Europe an electric-light trap has been tried.

RAINLESS TAUNDERSTORM.

The prolonged drought in England has called attention to the fact that rainfall is not essential to the production of thunder and lightning, rainlces local storans having been reported. From the Meteorological Office it ia-atated that such storms are not ecmipün,, but that a few near severe one are

Chepstow on August 9th, 1893, was record-! ed by E. J. Lowe in Nuture. It began at 9 p.m., lasting five bours, and it was estimated that the flashes numbered at least 10,000. In a thunderstorm in 1903 near Cape Verde lighthouse, Capt. A. Simpson, of the steamship Moravian. found beth rain and lower clouds to be absent, although the sky was a continuous blaze of lightning for an hour.

A TINY MOTOR.

Tiniest of electromotors-weighing less than a quarter of an ounce-is the moar vellous machine made by G. Trevet, and presented to the French Academy of Sciences. It is a shunt-excited machine" with a Gramine ring, and takes 0.2 ampere of current at 3.5 volts. It is about 3/5 of an inch high, with a shaft 3/5 of an inch long. The held magnet wil has 660 turns of wire 1/5 of an inch in diameter. The Armature, & quarter of an inch in diameter, is wound in 6 sections, and the 289 turns of wire have a total length of about 6 feel. The commutator, less than an eighth of an inch in diameter, bas o plates, with 6 sheets of ebonite as insula- tion. Each brush, consisting of 2 plates, is an eighth of an inch long by 1/25 inch wide and 1/10 inch thick, and is pressed against the commutator by a screw and spring. The steel shaft is only 130 inch in diameter; the bearing only 1/60 inch.

A curious series of fine coronse around the sun, seen in a pine forest near Bay- oane about 7 o'clock in the evening on May 7th, has been reported to the French Astronomical Society by Prof. E. Dagiun. The coronae with the deep red of the sun's disk had the appearance seen when a Hame is viewed through a glass plate, The covered with lycopodium powder. phenomenon is attributed to a cloud of pollen grains, the pines having been in bloom at the time. It is this pollen that is the cause of so-called “sulphur rains, and the coronae no longer appeared, after such a sulphur rain hnd cleared the air.
