of the colonists. It just wants a few heads of firms to give a sympathetic fend, and to acknowledge that the need of such houses is real. We believe that it would be greatly appreciated, and that the necessity is greater now than in the old days. Time WINE & SPIRIT MERCHANTS, was when practically every junior who did not disgrace himself could look forward to a raling position in his firm. Nowadays, when the number of assistants employed is greater, there must always be a proportion whowill wait many years and may never reach the position which makes it easy to pay $100 to 8150 in house rent, and the outlook for such man is neither hopeful nor wholesome." If the need is great in Singapore, we believe it to be infinitely greater in Hongkong.

DISBANDING MORE TROOPs. Yesterday a large number of troops were disarmed and disbanded without any serious trouble. On Saturday there was some fighting near the tannery beside Tai Sha Tou between some of the robber soldiers and the loyal troops in the vicinity. The fighting was spasmodic and indecisive and neither were many killed nor was any great damage done. It is said that the intention was to loot the tannery, but so far as can be ascertained
o such attempt was made. On Sunday there was an execution of some robbers in this vicinity. About a dozen men were "shot, and from the appearance of the bodies it looked as if they had been mutilated afterwards.
