INTERESTING SPRECH BY LORD-INCHCAPE.
Lord and Lady Inchcape attended a Garden Party held at the Marble Palaca of the late Rajab Rajendra Mallick, on Saturday afternoon, March 2nd, given by the Indian shippers and constituents of the British India Steam Navigation Co. The occasion was taken advantage of to present Lord Inchcape with an address in a magnificent silver casket.
Lord Inchcape made the following
| reply:-
It has been a great pleasure to my wife and myself to revisit India where we spent many happy years and that pleasure has boon greatly enhanced by the kind recep tion we have had from my Indian friends the shippers by the British India Co. It has also been a great satisfaction to me to find that not only in Calcutta but at all the other ports I have visited those doing business with the British India. Company have given me a most kind reception and have gone out of their way to demonstrate

British India Company to endeavour to give its constituents satisfaction, to be. obliging, conciliatory, reasonable and always as good as their word. These are the methods by which we have gained your support during the last fifty or sixty years, and by these methods we hope to retain your good will. Now and again, there are people who become jealous of the success of the British India Company and who endeavour to sow discord between the Company and its constituents and we find it necessary to fight these green-cyed ill advised people, We have eron bad interested persons starting what they called Swadeshi steamers in opposition to the British India Company hoping to stir

But, gentlemen, they have not succeeded. The relations which have existed between the Indian shippers not only in Calcutta but elsewhere are founded too firmly on mutual good feeling and respect to be endangered by any interested attempts of this kind, and though now and again we may have to fight attacks which are made open us and may have to lose a little know that money in the fight wa eventually we shall win. Your experi- ence of us in the past, if I may venture to say so, is that you do not find us high- banded or unreasonable where we have no competition and you know. perfectly well that though you may enable us to hold our trade we never squeeze you when those who attack us are driven off.

THE APCAR LINE.
CIRCUMSTANCES OF ITS ASSORPTION. When the trade of the world is generally good, shipping is the first individual busi- ness to benefit. On an ebb-flow of de- pression a wave of commercial prosperity came during the early months of 1911; it has since grown considerably in volume; the profits of steamship companies have increased and their shares have travelled gradually on an upward grade. The great shipping, corabias came with the advent of 1019 as a direct result of the good times, says Commerce (Calcutta), the pur- chase of the Chion Castle Line by the Royal Mail Company being synchronous, with a pronoanced advance on the part of the Peninsular & Oriental, both the deferred stock and the service of the lat ter concern being materially advantaged. We have now a merger, of direct local interest resulting presumably from a simi lar cause, the British India Steam Naviga tion Company having acquired Messra. Apcar & Company's line of steamers which ply between Calcutta, the Straits Settlements, Hongkong, China and Japan. As Messrs. Mackinnon & Mackenzie are the managing agents in Calcutta of the purchasing company it has been presumed and rightly presumed, we believe-that the return of Lord Inchcape to the Orient. has been one of the main causes which led to the transaction. Lord Incheape left England when the greater combine to which we have referred was the chief topic of the hour, and with his business percep- tions stimelated by the magnificent op- portunities which are now before the ship- ping trade he would be more likely, per baps, than any of his co-directors, to grasp the situation and to take prompt advant
These circumstances have, no doubt, bear well weighed in the balance by the directors of the British India Com- pany, and it may be conjected that the opposition we mention will have an animating rather than a deterring effect upon their future operations.
