THE APCAR LINE.

CIRCUMSTANCES OF ITS ASSORPTION. When the trade of the world is generally good, shipping is the first individual busi- ness to benefit. On an ebb-flow of de- pression a wave of commercial prosperity came during the early months of 1911; it has since grown considerably in volume; the profits of steamship companies have increased and their shares have travelled gradually on an upward grade. The great shipping, corabias came with the advent of 1019 as a direct result of the good times, says Commerce (Calcutta), the pur- chase of the Chion Castle Line by the Royal Mail Company being synchronous, with a pronoanced advance on the part of the Peninsular & Oriental, both the deferred stock and the service of the lat ter concern being materially advantaged. We have now a merger, of direct local interest resulting presumably from a simi lar cause, the British India Steam Naviga tion Company having acquired Messra. Apcar & Company's line of steamers which ply between Calcutta, the Straits Settlements, Hongkong, China and Japan. As Messrs. Mackinnon & Mackenzie are the managing agents in Calcutta of the purchasing company it has been presumed and rightly presumed, we believe-that the return of Lord Inchcape to the Orient. has been one of the main causes which led to the transaction.
