CANCER FROM COAL TAR.

The belief that the tar and pitch from gas works is the cause of the spread of cancer among workmen has been recom mended to the British Parliament. The Home Becretary stated that blast-furoace pitch is less liable to give rise to cancer, and had been specifically exempted in Home Office regulations for patent fuel made with pitch. One-view is that cancer results from anthracene, a gas-pitch con stituent not found in furnace-pitch.

LIGNITE FUEL.

After slacking by exposure, lignites from Texas, North Dakota and California have been made into briquettes without pitch or other binder. The briquetting cost, with a German apparatus, was-41:86 to $1.76 per ton, and the heat value wES increased 38 to 54 per cent.

In a communication to the French Academy of Sciences, M. Birkeland has pointed out that these variations agrée closely with the periods of regular magnetic waves of polar regions, and this would seem to indicate that the Zodiacal Light is electrical phenomenon. A number of ex- periments suggest that it may be part of a ring of luminous matter surrounding the sun in the plane of its inagnetic equator.
