Nervous Breakdown, Paralysis-

The master force which conquered the most perilous afflictions and enabled him to endure amazing hardships, says Captain Henderson, is derived entirely from Phosferine. Exposed by his adventurous life to an extraordinary series, of misfortunes, from being disabled in action, to sunstroke, enteric fever, and paralysis of the legs, this gallant officer was yet able, entirely owing to the aid of Phosferint, to leave the hospital and fight through to the end of the Boer War! Under blows which make men reel and fall, Captain Henderson was so upheld by the vitalising and bracing qualities of Phosferine, that actually on his return home he was robust and vigorous enough to win four military prizes, in one day, including the famous Victoria Cross Cup

Cured with Signal Success.

Captain D. E. Henderson, 1, Marino Avenue, Clontarf, Dublin, writes:- "During the late Boer War, 1 had a severe shock from lightning, and an injury to the spine through any horse being killed in action and rolling on top of me. In India, some years previously, 1 had an attack of sun stroke, and was five months-in hospital with Enteric Fever. These troubles told upon me, and ultimately resulted in a complete nervous breakdown when in Pretoria. I was admitted to hospital when I had lost the use of my legs. I was treated for neuritis and sent out only partly cured, and then started taking Phosferine systematically and regularly, The benefit I received was marvellous; in two months time I was back. in the field and fought right through until the end of the war. Owing to a great financial loss, which preyed on my mind, I bad a second break down, and the doctor told 'ine that I would probably be paralysed for life. I thought again of Phosferine, and after using it about three weeks my strength gradually returned and the frightful depression and weakness left me. The proof of which is that, in the military sports, I won four prizes in one day, including the Victoria Cross cup."--July 14, 1917.

GEOFF LOVETT'S MOUNT

The double event did not come on. Fireboy lost the Australian Cop, failed to get a place; at the same time Geoff had won a considerable amount over Moon light.

The Sydney meeting followed close on to the V.R.C. and Moonlight was to try his luck again in the Doncaster Handi- cap; even with his penalty he wae con

Fireboy and sidered to have a chance. Nerone were in the Sydney Cup: Bob Crisp thought the form of the first named in the Australian Cup was too bad to be correot, so hegged Geoff to give him a chance of regaining his character at Rand wick Nerone had a light weight, and Chris Alert was given the pick of the mounts. After a roughing up gallop at the Oaks, he decided to ride Nerone, although Crisp wanted him to be on Fire

boy,

A few days before the Sydney meeting. Louis Bannf said to Rose Johnso

"I'm going over to Sydney will you

come

"Going there she exclaimed sur, prised.

"It is necessary; I have some important business an hand; it may possibly bring in money, a good deal.

"I hope so, we can do with it," she eaid.

Beauf had something on his mind, there was no doubt of it, and it was not entirely connected with money matters? One rea son for going to Sydney was to see Geoff Lovett about the will his father had left. Baunt had skilfully done what he required to the document, and had no doubt his scheme would be snecessful.

"I think I'll wait until the Randwick meeting is over," he said to himself when there will be they arrived in Sydney; opportunities then, and if he has a good win, be might come down handsome."

Moonlight's weight stopped him in the Doncaster Handicap, although he made a gallant show, and in the Sydney Cup, Nerone failed by a neck to beat Dandy, Over these events Geoff dropped some of his Melbourne winnings, and he leter mined to go for a recovery on a horse called Bitters in the Welter Handicap. Bitters was owned by a friend of Harry who had given the mount to Barney's Geoff. The horse was a peculiar temper, ed animal, and on more than one occasion had lost a race he ought to have won when heavily backed.

Geoff Lovett was generally successful with such horses, but he had not ridden Bitters, and Crisp advised him not to do so.

"They think it's a pretty good thing if he'll do his best," said Geoff, "aud I must try and coax him into a good humour. He'll be at a longish price, and 1' make a recovery over him."

"Not the sort of horse to bet on," said Crisp. "It's about two to one he'll not

try.

Harry Barney had a trifle on Bitters Susie was at a race meeting for the first time since her father's death; she was quite her old self again, and very happy with Harry at her side.

Louis Bannt saw them and thought there was a good chance of drawing money from Geoff, who was very fond of his sister; be trusted to make a satis factory deal over the will,

It was, however, not Susie he watched

her face.

I'll wait and see how he shapen when he's on the track; it will be wasting money to put it on if he's very bad."

"Careful man, you are, Joe," said Geofi, laughing.

One has to be in these times," was the bookmaker's comment,

All right now, Mr. Lovett," said the trainer. "I'm afraid he's in a nasty mood; if so, you must look out for squalle never mind the horse if there's danger, look after yourself.

As they were talking Mab, Surio and Harry came up.

"I wish I had not asked you to ride Bitters," said Harry,

***Why

Because he's a man-eater."

He'll not get the chance to eat me,' said Geoff, laughing.

Keep your legs away from his head, or he's sure to make a grab at them," said the trainer

Bittera remained still until Geoff was in the saddle; when he turned the horse's head to go out of the paddock, ho sudden- I plunged, lashed out behind; and had Harry Burney not been on the alert, and pulled Mab and Susie out of reach, the past consequences might have been serious; as it was. Mab felt the wind whistle

her ears.

Bitters tried hard to unseat, his rider, but failed. Euraged at his defeat, the horse threw himself down, trying to roll on his rider, but Geoff was too quick fort him. Shipping from the saddle, he step- ped out of harm's way, and caught Bitters by the reins as he rose and shook himself. The horses, over a score, had gone out of the paddock, and were making their way to the start.

·

Hurry up, sir, or they'll go without you," said an attendant. Geoff smiled as he said,

"I can't go without the horse, and he's obstinate; I'll have another try.??

He manausred to get into the saddle, and at last succeeded. Bitters had not Without warning done with his tricks.

he backed, all four feet off the ground, back arched, and head down, Logging Geoff was shot out hard at the reins. like a rocket, and landed on his back, the wind knocked out of him, but quickly recovered.

His face was set, determined; he had no intention of being beaten.

"Better not get up again," said the trainer.

The breather seemed to have done Bitters good, for he lined up quite amiably, Gilpin on Cornet, finding him- self next to Geoff said,

CHAPTER XXV.

A FATEFUL DAY.

It was a good start, the lot went away so closely as Mab Seymour; his eyes level, the arst to break the line being followed her everywhere, and yet he seemed to avoid her, keep out of her Merry Andrew, a speedy animal, but not sight. She appeared to possess some generally regarded as a weight carrier. attraction for him, which he could not Comet and Bitters were together, Fall resist. Once he met her, and as she look Cry just behind them. As they neared ed at him, a puzzled expression crossed the bend into the straight, Merry Andrew. fell back and Pan took up the running. There was some scrimmaging for places at the turn, and Full Cry struck heavily into Bitters, who was just in front of him. Geoff felt his horse swerve, then stagger, and plunge forward; he kept his seat, and managed to hold Bitters on his legs. Fortunately, there was no spill, but the mishap had not improved the temper of Geoff's mount.

"I wonder who he is," she muttered, "what a strange likeness."

Bannt, who knew many people, soon discovered that Cornet was regarded as little short of a certainty for the Welter mile. Cornet hailed from Melbourne; the Victorian stables were in form, and Abs Peersol and his particularly chums were backing him; this much Bannf knew. Gilpin had the mount; he would-not-have. ridden for Peersel. Cornet ran in the name of Calcot, but he was the book maker's property, although not many of the public were in the secret.

"They're backing Cornet as though the race were over," said Joe Button Some hódy must know something; wonder where young Lovett is Bitters might take it into his wilful head to do his best for him; if he does, he'll win?___

He looked round, and in a few minutes saw Geoff going over to the horse. Jos knew Geoff well; he was one of the few racing men the famous cricketer treated as a friend. Hastily taking off his bag, he handed it to one of his clerks, saying

"Keep on betting, you can lay Corret as much as you like it's a short price, and

he may be beaten.

Comet was now in front, going well, with a clear run up the straight at this point it looked odds on the favourite. The yellow jacket was a long way behind; it was evident, something had happened, but no one knew what Geoff tried coax ing; he knew Bitters had been struck into. that it was not the horse's fault, and this made him more patient. He still remem bered this when Bitters became savage. and at first tried persuasive powers. He saw Comet sailing, ahead, half a dozen horses close after the leader, then another lot, and gathered from this he was nearer last that first. This would never do; all his friends were on Bitters. He stood to win a fair amount, and some sort of an effort must be made.

Coaxing having failed, Geoff, cut Bitters sharply with his whip. The horse plunged. forward, then became mulishly obstinate; He then went after Geoff, who was he would not gallop. Geoff was not going standing looking seriously at Bitters. The to be beaten; he struck Bitters hard horse was a six-year-old black gelding: The blows rained down; such punishment at one time a notorious buckjumper, but appeared to have lost this had fault, and must have effect, and so it did, for at last the horse realised resistance was useless.. adopted others. Abe Peersol stood near Louis' Bannt, and when he saw Comet coming in at the end of the field, he shouted so loud that Mab looked at him. She saw the man standing beside him, and again noted the strange likeness that had attracted her before. Sho forgot the race, so absorbed was she in the contemplation of this face.
