The Great Channel Swim
Burgess' Endurance and Vitality-
It is the big success, the great deed itself, that proves the wisdom of Burgess in employing Phosferine to provide the endurance and energy which enabled him to swim the Channel. To Phosferine the mighty Yorkshireman owes it that he has achieved more than any other living man, for on this historic occasion he used Phosferine to prepare for his daring and thrilling 23 hours' swim! Comparing his triumph with his previous failures, Burgess declares that the unlimited nerve force derived from Phosferine furnished the endurance to finish his swim successfully this time. Obviously Phosferine was the making of Burgess' great deed, and alike with other innumerable victors who have achieved renown by the invigorating aid of Phosferine, he frankly declares that Phosferine alone provides the force and vitality necessary for continuous mental and physical exertion.
How he made success sure.
THE HONGKONG DAILY PRESS, SATURDAY, MARCH 2xo, 1918.
Mr. T. W. Burgess, 30, Dover Road, Walmer, Deal, writes:-"I am very pleased to place on record my keen appreciation of Phosferine a3 a nerve and muscle tonic of the highest order. I have proved from. experience the unfailing efficacy of this admirable remedy, and in preparing for this special demand upon my energies, it has been of incalculable benefit to me, and its recuperative effects immediately after Its sustaining and my successful Channel Swim were excellent. strengthening properties are very marked, and for nervous breakdown and feats of physical endurance I consider Phosferine is indispensable." "Of course I am; he's engaged to ride nine."
"I didn't think it was settled," said Bannf. "It's as good; he knows better than back out of it at this time of day."
"If he does not ride, who will you put up?"
"My lad Frisk, but the Midget will have the mount."
Chris Alert thought it better to write and let Abe Persol know he did not intend rld-

"I clinch bim when I get the chance," roared Abel Wonder what he'll ride?"
CHAPTER XXI.-Continued. When Louis Bannf arrived home, he read the paper carefedly through; there was no doubt about James Love:t's intention; ifing Swiftsure. This he did, and Abe's sur and raved, saying he would let him see he Susie married Harry Barney, she would lose prise was as great as his rage. He blustered her fortune,

To be divided among the hospitals in Sydney and Melbourne; how would that look? Not at all bad. If it was to go to the son, it would be of no use, he would hand it back to her-the hospital business is best. Fancy James Lovett turning. ing out to be a philanthropist, what a joke!" Carefully he filled in what he required, after making several copies on sheets of paper, until he had one that suited him. He poured some liquid out of a small bottle on to a piece of blotting paper, holding it close to the ink, but not touching it.
Wonderful solution," he muttered, then, as he lifted the blotter and looked at the ink, no one could tell it was not written at the same time as the other. Now for the signia
ture.
He took out a letter addressed to himself, signed "James Invert."
Easy signature," he muttered,, " can't make a mistake over it,"
He copied the name half a dozen times, then signed the paper, holding the blotter over it as before. Gathering the papers he hind scribbled on, he took them downstairs after locking the pher in his desk.
CHAPTER XXIX
** THE MIDGET'S" DECISION. The market on the big sprint handicap at Flemington was unsettled. Horses went up and down in the betting in the most extra- ordinary way. There was a demand for Swiftsure; then it was rumoured she would not run as she had gone late. There was no doubt about her limping off the track after a gallop at Caulfield one morning, one took much notice of Moonlight for the Most people Newmarket Handicap. thought he would run for the St. Leger the same afternoon. Geoff had, however, back ed him to win a considerable sum at a hundred to three, and also coupled him with Fireboy and one or two more in the Cup.
The nominal favourite was Wootha, the champion sprinter, a splendid horse whose performances were quite out of the common. He had gst. 10lb. to carry, and even with this burden possessed a good chance. Sha- dow, Langreach, Moonre, and others were well supported.
Moonlight having a light weight, Geoff had been anxious to secure Chris Alert minia- ture man, strong, and with plenty of ex- perience. The Midget," as he was gener ally called, went to scale al 6st: b. with out any trouble. Bebera
He was, however, partially engaged to ride Swiftsure, but had not given his final pro mise. The reason for this was that he did not like Abe Peersol and his ways. At the same time, if Swiftsure could win he had no intention of throwing such a chance away. Abe Peersol, however, took it for granted Chris Alert would ride for him. He never thought he would refuse such a good mount. When, Swiftsure was reported lame he told Chris he had no occasion to take any notice of the report, as the mare often pulled up a bit dotty," but that she was not un-. sound, nor was there any fear of ber break- ing down.
It soon became known that "the Midget " would ride Moonlight, not Swiftsure, and Geoff's horse came with a rattle in the bet
•
"He's a fool as well as a rogue," said Abe, alluding to Chris; Moonlight has no chance,"
"He must have," said Bannf. "After all, te borse in a gallop." Chris is a clever hittle fellow, and he's ridden
"You know Lovett?" said Abe.
Yes, and his father before him," said
anal,
Can't he be squared, persuaded to give Chris up?
Banni Imughed as he said:
I shouldn't like to try it on."
Every man has his price," said Abe.. Banni thought this generally applicable, Abe Peersol knew what Chris Alert was in although he put Geoff down as an exception, the saddle. He was aware that Frisk was not nearly so capable; and us he bad backed swiksure to win a big stake he was much upset. There was no help for it, however; lie had stormed at Chris, and all to no pur- pose.
I did not promise to ride your mare," said the jockey, and 1 was free to accept the mount on Moonlight."
Abe, seeing blustering had no effect, chang- ed his tactics.
"Are you riding Lovett's horse because you think it will win?" he asked.
Not exactly. He's promised me a liberal fre anyhow, and I like him.”
That's as much as to say you don't like me," said Abe.
I can't say I'm deeply impressed in your favour, sald Chris.
"I've never done you any harm, "grum. bled Abe..
"No, I took care of that."

"Once you did.""
When?"

"It was your fault I was had up' at Moonee Valley in that Rolick case. I found out all about it, but you failed. forgotten that shabby trick, and if I can beat your mare in the Newmarket, will;"any- how I'll do my best," said Chris.
Wonder how he found that out?" Abe thought, as the jockey left the shop." Beat me, will he? I'll take care of that."
"Hallo, Lucas, you here? What do you ride on Saturday?"
ft was Lucas Gilpin came into the tobac conist's shop. which Abe, like many others, kept for special purposes of his own.

"Up on the favourite, are you?" said Abc, with a wink, of which Lucas took no notice.
I see the Midget's riding Moonlight," said Lucos, "thought you'd secured him?? So did, but the little thief threw me
over.”
"Who are you putting up? **Frisk.
"Your "mare's well in." "Fairly."
"Rubbish, she's thrown in.
The Midget had ridden for Geoff several times, liked him, and knew he was a thorough sportsman; moreover he was fond of cricket, and for that reason regard-hand.** ed him as somewhat of a hero.
By appointment Geoff met Chris Alert a few days before the meeting. In answer to Geoff's question he said
"I have not settled with Peersol about rid ing Swiftsure."
"Has he another jockey in reserve in ease you decline the mount?" asked Geoff.
"There is a good lad in the stable-Fred Frisk-who can easily do the weight. He is very anxious to have the mount; they all! think the mare a good thing."
"I wish you would ride. Moonlight for me. I should be confident if you did.”
"Are you sure he has a chance, a good chance?" asked Chris.
"Yes, whatever beats him will win.".
Most people think he's going for the St. Leger
They are mistaken, he cannot stay the distance, but over six furlongs he's terribly fast," said Geoff
I'd like to ride him. I don't care for Peersol, but Swiftsure ought to win with her weight," said the jockey,
***Give me an answer one way or the other said Geoff. If you are not tied to Pearsol, I'll make it worth your while to ride for me. I'll give you fite pounds for the mount; and if Moonlight wins you shall have. five hundred to fifteen about him. I put it on for you out of my lot. **/
This was more than he could get from Abe Feersol, and it Swiftsure lost there would be no end of grumbling and fault finding. The prospect of riding for Geoff Lovett was much more enticing,
AS The jockey pondered over the offer, and after reflection said
