REVIEWS,
THE HONGKONG DAILY PRESS, SATURDAY, JANUARY 27TH, 1912
The Navy League Annual, 1911-12,5 Edited
by ALAN H. BURGOYNE, London: John: Murray.
The Navy League Annual makes its fifth appearance, and its publication is made. under the same favourable auspicca that. have signalised former issues. It keeps its readers well informed on the subject of naval progress, and the various changes that. have taken place during the year and the changes which are contemplated are ade quately dealt with, while articles from writers of repute stimulate interest on the various aspects of naval preparation and activity. One of the most interesting articles is that descriptive of the aeroplane in warfare. Not the least valuable portion of the book is the tabulated lists which facilitate comparison between the navies of
the world.
Whittaker's Almanack, 1912,
Probably there is no more popular book of reference than Whittaker's Almanack. Not only is it in daily use to settle points of dispute, but it is an ever available source of trustworthy information whose value has been proved by an ever-increasing number of patrons. As stated in the advertisement it contains a vast amount of information respecting the government, finances, popula- tion, commerce, and general statistics of the various nations of the world, with special reference to the British Empire and the United States, and that it is accepted as an authority on the various subjects of which it treats shows that its authenticity and ac- curacy are undisputed. No greater · testi- monial than this could be desired of any publication.
Hongkong Street Index. ARTHUR CHAPMAN.
Hongkong: Noronha & Co.
The sixth edition of this valuable work has recently been issued. It is an index to the streets, horses, numbers and lots of the City of Victoria, adjacent districts and Kow- loon, and its careful compilation by Mr. A. Chapman, the Government Assessor, gives it a value which is not to be denied. It is most comprehensive, and the painstaking character of the work deserves adequate re- cognition.
The Imperial English and Chinese Diary and Almanac. Hongkong: Messrs. Kelly & Walsh,
This Diary and Almanac is already given a place in the business life of the Far East From which it is not likely to be ousted. As a dlary, and apart from being interleaved with blotting paper, its convenience is such As to command the favour of all into whose hands it falls. Its general information is very extensive, and the book is one that deservedly holds a high place in the regard of business people in the Far East. Who's Who. London: A. and C. Black.
This publication, which has become in- dispensable in newspaper offices and has a decided commercial value for business men,. grows larger every year. This year a strik- ing increase in bulk is noticed, when it is placed alongside its predecessor. To say anything in commendation of Who's Who is a work of supererogation. It has filled a need which makes us wonder how it was ever done without, and when we add that the latest edition worthily maintains the high reputation of the publication nothing remains to be said.
Who's Who Year Book, 1912-13, London:
A, and C. Black.
The book is made up of the tables which were formerly a popular feature of Who's Who. These supply the kind of information needed to enable anyone to take advantage
of the information in the order of publicar la
fion, and strange lists, in addition to the ordinary lists.. give the book a unique place. It is published at one shilling,
The First Born. By R. MunnAY GILCHRIST.
London: T. Werner Laurie.
Though somewhat gloomy in its opening chapters, this story is one of much power and imagination, rather above the average turned out by the prolific, fiction writers of the twentieth century. Its setting is the Peak- land district of Derbyshire, and it seems almost as if Thomas Waidron; a strongly drawn character, were typical of the land in which he lived. Pride of birth, and family plays a strong part in the story,, and, the incidents which fill the earlier chapters are perhaps far from pleasant while undoubtedly necessary for the development of the story. Then there comes a sweet maid who ex- ercised a seftening influence upon the heart of the hard, proud squire of Waldron, awakens thoughts of love in the mind of the first-born, and brings joy and happiness. where before there was contention and strife and gloom. The story is certainly well worth reading.
Builds up Strength.
As a recuperative in all cases of lung, stomach or bowel weakness, or after any severe illness, Angier's Emulsion positively has no equal. Bland and pleasant, it promotes appetite, aids digestion, and builds up health and strength. It is the ideal tonic and builder, because it is soothing and healing as well as strengthening,
Angier's Emulsion
WPETROLEUM WITH MYPOPHOSPHITES)
SUPERIOR TO ALL OTHER EMULSIONS.
Angier's Emulsion is entirely different and superior to all other Emulsions
·because it combines the remarkable boal- ing properties of our special petroleum with the tonic properties of the hypo- phosphites. It is unquestionably the most palatable emulsion and it agrees per- fectly with delicate stomachs.
'THERE IS NO BETTER · TONIC."
Dear Sire,-In all cases of chronic cough, and in all wasting diseases of adults and children, pulmonary and gastro-intestinal, there is no better tanie than Aagier's Emulsion. I prescribe it to more than half my patients, You may make use of this testimonial, minus my name.
