by the people. Seeing the importance at tributed by the Indian Plague Commission to the agency of fleas and rats, in carrying the infection, the procedure had been of laie years considerably modified. Referring next to sleeping sickness and African fever, be argued that it is difficult to drug a native population and asserted that it much better to stop the disease at the foun tain head rather than to try and cure cases. Other diseases dealt with were Spirilar or tick fever, amoebic and facilar dysentery, Malta fever, kala azar (or the epidemic fever of Assam), yaws, paragonimiasis and beri- beri: In speaking of the last-named disease, Dr. Atkinson said experience in the Victoria Gaol Hongkong, tended to confirm the view that the use of unpolished rice would be found an effective preventive measure. The Superlitendant of the Gaul reported the facts as follows: "No case of beri beri has originated in the last fifteen years. Polish- en rice is not supplied to the prisoners and never has been, They have always been given polished rice, as it is cheaper than polished rice, Alluding to the London School of Tropical Mederine, which in :809

(Continued from page 3). By that. Dr. Manson expounded the hypothesis that the mosquito was the inter- mediary host of the malarial parasite. It was very apt, he said, that this hypothesis should have been conjectured by a physician who was for some years practising in this malarial-stricken island. The discovery that mosquitoes are capable of transmitting malarial fevers has practically revolutionised the sanitation of many tropical regions. Dr. (now Sis) Patrick Manson, whom many of us. know, previous to coming to Hongkong was for many years practising in Amoy, and it was there by a series of laborious and -care- fi experiments during the years 1878-1883 He had demonstrated that in Filariasis the minsquito was the intermediary host of Filaria Nocturna, filarial periodicity thus being shown by him to be an adaptation of the parasite to the nocturnal habits of the mosquito. Arguing from this he conjectured that a particular species of mosquito was capable of acting as the host-to the malarial parasite. It was left to Major Ross, 13.9.. by his discoveries in India during the years 1894-1867 to prove the truth of the mosquito mafarial hypothesis which had orginated in the master wind of Manson. These ex- periments of Ross's were confirmed by To show, Grassi, Bignant and Dastinelli.
Continuing, the President said SUANGBAL SHARE QUOTATIONS, that no argument could be reasonably brought
