Tarnished Coronets: Studies in the History
of the British Peerage. Illustrated, by T. M. N. D'AUVERGNE, .. Landon Werner Laurie.
Mr. D'Auvergne has a whole-souled con- tempt. for the British aristocracy. He has chosen a subject that is sure to be popular at a time like the present, when the Chan- cellor of the Exchequer employs as the most powerful weapon in his armoury the de nunciation of aristocrats and hereditary legislators and pours contempt on the first of the litter." Another age will doubtless take a different view of the Chancellor's invective and forni a different estimate of a taste which makes use of such methods to inflame class passions; but we have yet some distance to travel before the British people, in England and beyond the seas, necd- thai "the statement lessly offensive monarchy has dwindled to a shadow and has become a pretty toy to amuse the people and divert their attention from the serious busi- Whatever under- ness of Government."

mining influences have been at work to pull down the aristocracy, the monarchy still retains a firm hold on the notions of the people, We are still a long why off the abolition of the monarchy and the establish- ment of a republican form of Government, even though it may be supposed by some that the wisest measures of Governmental reform are placing power more bounteously in the hands of the proletariat. It must be confessed that in seeking for material with which to besmirch the House of Lords, Mr." It les at D'Auvergue has not far to go. land in copious measure. But we do not see that in exposing the abuses of a hyegone Age and laying bare the crimes, insincerity, dishonesty, chicanery, vonality, self-seeking and. erroneous judgments of men like the Earl of Sunderland, the Duke of Marl- borough, Lord Lovat, the Duke of Wharton, Lord Holland, the Earl of Sandwich, Earl Ferrers, the Earl of Clare pind the Earl of Eldon, the author does tiny real good to the cause of humanity and human progress. What though the founders of some of the British peerages have been the most arrant scoundrels? The, aristocrsey had no mang poly of vice, bad manners, bad judgment. They had not in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries; neither have they today, in spite of the smugness, 60 essentially English which claims virtue as

this, for two blacks never make a white, but
in reading Mr. D'Auvergne's indictment men
of judgment bear in mind the influenics of the environment of a bygone age, and the necessarily slow progress of a people towards a higher plate of civilisation. If it is Mr. D'Auvergne's desire-as apparently it is- to discredit the present members of the House of Lords by an exposure of the licentiousness and corruptness of some of their progenitors, it would only be fairplay (and we English people profess a belief in fairplay, of "playing the game," though we do not always' act up to it) to give something of the noble lives which even some aristocrats have lived, and of which a shining example: is Lord-Shaftesbury. It does not follow that because the founder of an aristocratic house did not live an absolutely blameless life his descendants are blackguards from whôm na virtue, can emanate, or that, the House of Lords exists for no other purpose than 10 protect property and privilege to the degrada- tion and enslavement of the common people. We agree that the hereditary principle in the House of Lords is indefensible, that a reform in the governmental system of the. British Empire is necessary to meet changed conditions: but we would not go to Mr. D'Auvergne's glorified pamphleteering for arguments in favour of that reform.
Those who like to rend of the weaknesses. and foibles of "the great" will find an in- terest in Mr. D'Auvergne's pages. There is not much that is discreditable in the lives of the men named above that he has got brought to the surface. It seems to us to be a privilege nowadays to have been born obscure and never to have risen above the dradelevel of mediocrity. "Hearts just as true and fair, my live in Belgrave Square as in the lowlier air of Seven Dials." The historian does not trouble himself with the dull, drab. lives of the rank and file, and so most of us may live happily in the thought. that we shall never be held up to public ridicule, and the abioque of a future genera- tion of D'Auvergnes. With which comfort ing reflection we leave this contribution to the bonfire to be demanded by a future Lord *Rosobery !. -"
