The immediate loss to the company owing to the state of fire thus decribed may, the board observe, bascertainable, but “ the future burden of expenditure, seeing that every mcck- man, skilled or unskilled, in
in overy direction connected with thipping, has obtained a very increase of wage must remiin an undeterrin. ed problem for a considerable time to come"
It is with grew regret the directors mention that Mr. G. F. Johnson ha besa obliged to retire from the scoretaryship on socomat of impaired health after a long serrios-in various pests both at hope and abroad. He is sucosded by Mr. F. J. Abbott, who but recently been one of the company's agents in Japan.
SUMMARY OF THE YEAR'S OPERATION, "The last annual report called attoution to the fact that after throw very lean years ship. ping had experienced a gre rebound, and in the case of the company the freight returns had shows an improvenient for the year of £215,000. This improvement has been mintained through- out the year under review-although the fright roturas, amounting to £1,721,665, show an ad. verse difference of £12,582 as compared with the previous year
"As to the future, it is impossible during the present chaos in thing to a win towel
ecome in that part of the world, but in other respects shipping prospects appear fairly hopeful.
Far
The passenger receipts for the £1,294,421, are ahead of these of last year by nearly £47,003, It is satisfutors to note that this increase is spread over the company's services generally. The touring business has been larger than last year swing no dealt to. an exception lly ane summer,"
The board remark that sil shipowners must look forward to hoceased labour bills, "and also apparently to enhanced coal prices, sa controts made for next year show a distinct advane in price."
