....Samo as No. 1.
It is with much satisfaction wo learn that the boring mastsh proposed between John- son and Wells will not take place on British noil. The action of the freeholders of Earl's Courtin applying for an interlocutory injunction prevent their property from being used as the scene of the 62Counter, the success of which brought the police court proceedings to an abrupt close yesterday, is the direct outcome of the pressure of public opinion, which has been steadily gathering strength ever sines the objection to the contest were first raised. The opposition has come from men of widely divergent views, united in this watter upon broad grounds of public interest. Fights bo- tween a white man and black are not of modern origin. Be the extract from The Times of September 30, 1811, which we publish to-day Troves, but the relations
between white and black bare undergone a vast change in the last century. We have assumed throughout the Empire great and unparalleled

responsibilities, effect which this contest must undoubtedly have bad in those countries where "colour. South coast of China between) "feeling" unhappily exists. We have the fight in the belief that it was contrary opposed to the best interests of the Empire for this country to allow it to be held. The Une and mauly English sport of boxing has been neither assailed zor displaced by its prevention, nor has the opposition boen based
apon any personal feelings towards either Johnson or Wells. Indeed, it is only fair to recognize that both men have adopted an attitude of most commandable restraint over since publie opinion began to range itself against their meeting. In his cross-examination of Superin. tendent McIntyre in the proceedings at Bow street on Wednesday, moreover, Johnson showed power of advocacy which proves bo is posscssed of an acute brain as well as formidable fists. Neither the men nor boring as a sport have been arraigned, and the justification for tha opposition to the holding of the contest at. Earl's Court is founded, as we have declared from the first, upon the public interest of the Empire.
