TEA.

A Ban Francisco paper of the 17th, alt. con- tained the following:

Peading the arrival of a decision from the Secretary of the Treasury declaring whether the colouring matter used in this season's crop of Chinese tes is injurious to the consumer and is in violation of the pars food laws at the recent ruling of the department to the effect that no aatilleial colouring matter would be allowed in teas entering United States ports, there is nearly & million pounds of tea in this city awaiting shipment throughout the country. The decision of Secretary of the Treasury Franklin Mo- Veagh is orpected within a few days and may possibly reach bere this morning.

OVD-

Recently, Secretary MoVoagh requested seven tes experts, among them being Edward Brandenstein of this city, to examine the various teas imported into this country for the par pare of establishing a standard. Dommission

The decided that DO. tena taining artificial colouring matter should be received in this country, and a rule to this effect went into force last May, What are known as Chins tons are said by experts to bare always contained inore or less colouring matter, while those of Japan are declared free from such aids,

A larga shipment from China, amounting to over 600,000 pounds, was held up late in August and samples were sent to Washington for analysis, following tests bore, at which it was declared that traces of colouring matter were found. Since that time another large shipment has been received and the entire fat is awaiting Washington's decision. Meanwhile, the tes exporters of the country are said to be approach- ing a shortage of China tena and they are there fore anxious for the decision of Secretary McVeagh.
