"AMERICAN TRADE WITH THE PHILIPPINES

Removal of restrictions under the Payne Law has vastly increased American trade with the Philippine Islands, but we should he pleased to record California as getting a larger share of the business than the figures indicate, says the San Fransisco Call. A comparison of the business dons in the fiscal year anding June 30, 1911, with that of the year before, the Payne tariff went into effect given the following results Exports of Domestia Merabandise to the Islands,

Imports of Philippine Products

Nov. and steel, 82,400,000: boots and shens, 2400,000

iron Second half of broadstaffs, $340,000: paper, 8300,000, and Nov. automobiles, $350,000. None of these articles is a California product, and almost the only item in the list of Pacific coast production in Osh, which shows an increase from $108,000 to $268,000.

The Steamers are all fitted throughout with Electric Light and have accommodation to a limited number of Saloon Passengers, and will take Cargo to all Netherlands-Indian Porta on through Bills of Lading.

JAVA-CHINA-JAPAN LIJN. Telephone No. 375.

It may

may be inforred. from these figures that California preducers and manufacturers have not mode any serious effort to push their trade with the islands. There should be a profitable market there for our dried and caused fruits and wines and other semi-tropical products. The island market is worth going after and California has the natural advantage of

PHILIPPINES S.S. CO.geographical position for the trade.
