THE KING'S SHIPS,

1889-1911.

Twenty-two years ago King George brought -his first independent command affont to an end and paid off No. 79 torpedo-bost at Portamo atb. The event is recalled by the announcement that although many of the torpedo bosts of 1935-6 are to be utilized as targets for night practise No. 79 is to be spared for the present owing to

It was when he was Prince George of Waleg. that the King commissioned No. 79 at Ports month, on July 18, for the naval manmyres of 1889, Between that date and September 6 the torpedo boat cruised in home water, and prin- elpally on the Irish coast. She was present at the inspection of the Flot by King Edward, then Prince of Wales, and the German En- peror, who arrived for the purpose under the escort of a German squadron commanded by Admiral von Kall. It was in honour of this occasion that the German Emperor was made an honorary Admiral of the Fleet. Many stories are told of the adventures of Prines George in his torpedo boat and the shili and seamanship with which he hand. led his litde craft in the Irisk It

may

be noted that among other officers who commanded torpedo-boats in the same flotilla ware Rear Admiral Sir Charles Olley, now Secretary of the Imperial Defence Com mittee, Rear-Admiral Sir Colin Koppel, who will command the Medina during the King's visit to Indis; and Rear-Admiral the Hon. Somoreet A. Gongb-Calthorpe, who has recently been promoted to flag rank.

SUAS,

The second ship the King commanded -was the gunboat Thrash, which is still doing duty under the orders of the Admiral Cemmsuding Coastguard and Reserves. He was appointed

lieutenant-commander of this vessel, commissioned her on May 6, 1890, at Chatham, for service on the North America and Weat Indies Station. The Thrush was ordered to convoy torpedo-boat No. 70 to Gibraltar, and with this boat in tow she left Plymonth on June 1. She arrived at Ferrol on Jane 4, left two days later, and resched Gibraltar on June 9 Thers torpedo-bost No. 70 was paid off on June 14, and placed in reserve, it being the practice to keep a small number of torpedo craft at the Rook.
