A Clergyman
Nervous Collapse, Brain Fag,
Neuralgia-
For getting things done, making things go, the invigorating stimulus of Phosferine cannot be equalled, says the Rev. A. H Field. Fully aware that as a clergyman he is bound to make sure of the accuracy of his estimation of Phosferine, this gentleman states that, distinct from other cases, he has verified and tested the efficacy of the tonic himself. It was Phoslerine, and Phosferine alone, he says, which raised him from the nervous collapse, remedied the brain-fag and neuralgia which held down his efforts and arrested his plans over a lengthy period. Since taking Phosferine he is cutirely free from nervous distresses, and can put his whole heart and energies into his work, and indeed, such is his activity that he has roused many helpers to his cause. Experience has taught the RevA,IL Field that numbers of people do not realise their languor and half-hearted efforts are due to lack of nerve force, and be believes they will quicker appreciate the efficacy of Phosferine by learning of his own recovery.
Have No Existence Now.
Rev. A. H. Field, 336, Brettenham Road, Walthamstow, writes: "It gives me much pleasure to testify to the beneficial effects of Phosferine in many cases of nervous disorder, where I have advised. the use of your tonic. Some four years ago I myself had a nervous breakdown, and a friend advised Phosferinc.. I took his advice, and speedily found that I had acted wisely, for the neuralgic pains and the mental weariness soon took fight, and I was, thoroughly braced up. Recently some members of my church, at my suggestion, tried the remedy, and were quite satisfied with the beneficial results. I have, advised its use now for nearly four years, and in no case has it yet proved a failure. When one thinks of the great number of so-called nerve remedies, it is satisfactory to find at least one upon which reliance can be placed. I wish your Phosferine every success. When preaching away, I have noticed Phosferine finds a place in the village homes.

A. PLANT'S OWN DIARY. Finding that little is known of the causes that reduce the growth of the Egyptian cotton plant, W. L. Balls of Cairo bas devised an im. proved apparatus-the "stomatograph "--that records continuously throughout the day the effect of the prevailing sunlight, moisture and temperature. It consists essentially of on electrical air-pump, with relay oronit by which each stroke is telographed to in electra magnet carrying a pen that writes on a spiral drom.revolving once an hour. The purpose is to test varying porosity of 8 loat by pumping sir through it Each leaf has about 70 stoutata un the upper surface and 200 on the lower, and when food is forming in the Teaf cells these stomata are open, permitting air to be pamped through. The amount of air pumped is a direct measure of the degree of opening of the stomata and the plant's motivity. The trasp of one leaf for Ave days ɑbowɛ the stomata slowly opening after sunrise, more rapidly when the diroot sunlight reaches the leaves about 7 a.m., attaining a maximum about 9, partly closing as the soil dries at mid-day, then closing as the sun sinks behind the trees at 1.40 p.m., and remaining closed all night.TM

THE PHOTOGRAPHIC PHONOGRAPH.. The novel phonograph with which M. Lifschitz has been experimenting at the University of Paris uses a plintographic record, and reproduces the voice by passing this picture film in front of a jet of air merping from compression. For making the racord a little mirror is stinobed to "the diaphragm of an ordinary monthpisco. A beam of light from an electric lamp is reflected by the mirror to s strip of photographie' film" moved along by a motor, and the vibrations of the mirror are reproduced in the spot of light repeatedly photographed After development, the printed parts of the filmare etched out. giving the voice waves a series of small holes, When the picture Am 18 rum st bigb speed in front
of the air stream, the air passing through the holes reproduces the original vibrations, and re- prate the words or of her sounds that were pro- duced in the mouthpiece.
EXTENDING THE HEARING. The "telsooust," as lately patented in Eng- land, is a curious new instrument kind of sound telescope that catches a faint noise and magnifies, extending the range of the ear to four times the usual distance. The sup-shaped receiver can be pointed to say direction. The sound waves from the distant source are hrought fas focus by a parabolic reflector, and are passed through a flexible tube to ear-pieces. The volume of sound as thus oppcentrated is claimed to be twelve times
great મું would reach the unaided- ear. The instrument is sxpected to be espa vially valuable at ses, as it will not only pick up foghorn and other sounds, bat can be made to show their direction by turning the receiver until the noise is strongest.

The plan of freeing chimney gases from soot and dust by washing has given quite estonishing results at a escua factory at York, Eng. The Tn Tonk
gases are drawn by a fan from the boilor, passed through a brick-lined chamber containing the rather short-stack. For 300 enbiu foot of hot water sprays, and then by a tortuous course to a
gasenper hour, one gallon of water is used. The pas lack.coal contains 40 per cent. of dust, and in 24 houre the smoke washing has collected as much as 1,600 pounds of grit, or about 1.5 per cont of the coal burned.
