OCEAN CARRIERS FOR PANAMA
ROUTE
The San Francisco Chronicle of the 6th alt, publishes the following:-.
Carrying out the plan which ho outlined to President Taft at the time of the investigation of the Pasific Mai Company by the Benste ommittce on Inter-oceanic Cavala, R. N. Bakor of Daltimore yesterday incorporated at Trenton, N. 3. the Atlantic and Pacile Transport Com. pany of New Jersey, with an enthorized capital of $15,000,000.
The asucanced plan of this company is to build fifteen steamships at once, to be used on the rku between San Francisco and Now York when the Panama canal is open, and to be con structed to comply with the mail sub- sidy act-iron or steel steamships, capable of maintaining a speed of sixtoon kaots an hour at ses in ordinary weather, und of a gross registered tonnoge of not less than 5.000 tons,
INTIMATION
COMMERCE owes its growth to the steamship, the railroad and the REMINGTON TYPEWRITER, The time and labour it stres, the volume of work it does, and the opportunities it affords, combine to place the Remington Typewriter in the front rank of business. builders.
SIEMSSEN & Co.,
SOLE AGENTS
FOR
AND FORMOSA.
Following the terms of this ocean mail sorcion JUNG KONG, CANTON AND SOUTH CHINA act-the-Postmaster General last month adver- tixed for bids for carrying the mail between New York and San Franoiace, with weekly sailings, and calls at San Eedro. San Diego, Now Orleans and Charleston or Savannah, and a bi-monthly service from Seattie, with a call at Astoria,_1. TO BEGIN IN THREE YEARS. This sorvien is to basin, according to the advertisements for bids, "not latter than sto ber 18, 1914."
It is with the intention of bilding on this contrast that the Atlantic and Pacific Trai port Company has been formed. The mad aulsidy will amount to $20,000 for each trip, or $40,000 for the voyage from San Francisco to New York Bad return.
The statement of the new company is that it will have conuections on the Mississippi at New Orleans, and tint it will operate tow barges up und down the coasts of the Central and Boath American countries nor the canal zone, with connection with its big ships at the canal, and thus develop the entire domestic commoṛca of the country via the Panama canal as fully as it may be done by water transportstion. In this it believes that it has one of the greatest 'opportunities of the century,"
OTHER COMPANIES MAY JOIN.
Baker lius stood in a friendly relation to the firm of Fates & Chesbrough, the operators of the California and Atlantic line, and it is probable that this line which has already devolopoda considerable-business with be included in the
new company, if it is successful in placing its stock and carrying out its plans.
ono
At the same time comes the evidence that soma is buying in the stock of the Pacific Mail, several unusual transactions in the stock of that campany baring
boon recorded of late, As it is not to be presumel that the minority hold Lings of this stook would be attractise to large parebusers while the Seathern Pacific hold the majority of the stook, it has boca supposed that a transfer of ownership is being made with the consent of the railroad, in order to permit the ships of that company to benefit by the ocean. mail service act. It is surmised that interests friendly to the Baker syndicats are making those stock purchases, but no confirmation is to
be hud.
A ramour in financial circles hora that, a part of this plan is to 1130 trauspicille det of the Pacifis Mail on the anal route, transforming the ships into oll barnes, and thus practically abandoning the Pacific to the Japanese lines, which operate. onder a subsidy and with cheaper expenses.
~THE ANNUAL-TRAFFIC.
In outlining its plans and stating its inten tions the new company makes the following statement:
"The annual traffic from coast to coast estimated
been 2,000,007 tous to have two jours ago sud to be increasing at the rate of 10 per cont. eeh year, which will mean 4,200, 000 tour when the Panama canal 35
opened: This demonstrates that there is ample business
for all, Increased facilities. for shipping are never failed to in. crauss the volume of business, so that there will
always be enough trufle for both railroads and steamship lines. Because water transportation costs so much less than transportation by rail, the natural advantage will be this route, hence the new lins will enjoy the fall benefits open to American commerce by the Pagaш on
The new ships, in ocean comfort and luxory, will surpass
the best that is being done to-day in Europe. Special apparatus will keep the temperatury of the ship oren throughout the rip. A passenger may sail from New York to San Francisco or Seattle in A 100m which lie do keep at any temperature to desires. The cost of the trip will be about two- thirds of the cost of the railway journey, all expenses considered, The new line expects to do a large business during the San Francisco exposition and also to tarn much travel to the attractive place of South and Central America, Three years ag the Government saw that unless vew ships were built Amori- a would open the costliest canal in the World with practically no American ships to use it. In 1908 Secretary of War Weigh asked B. N. Baker, who had been in the steam- ship business twenty-five years, to ascertain why tas Pasana ronta was not being utilized. Baker male personal visits to the isthmus and the cities of the Pacifle Const, and the results ware contained in a statement which was transmitted February 10, 1910, to the enate Committe on Inter-nonie Canals. It was shown that the transcontinental railroad pool had been paying over $1, 03,000 a year to the Panama Railroad Company to suppress water competition by way of PanaR.
"One of the ways the Panama Rail. way Company did this was not to buikl its line to deep water. Other trips to Panama and to the Const and on the request of the Secretary of War Mr. Baker formulated plans for the commercial atilization of the canal. The Government is now advertising for the mail services, and the Atlantia and Pacific Transport Line is the embodiment of these suggestions and recom- mendations.
THE DIRECTORS,
were made,
In order that the trade advantages of the canal may be developed to the greatest benefit and profit of the people of the United States, the Postauster-General's instructions to bidders declare that the entitract will not be awarded to any bidder who shall be engaged in any competitive transportation business by rall The comping's charter conforms to this
condition,
The incorporators are veterans in the deep- soa transportation service; four of them were aassciated eficers and the original promoters of the Atlantio Transport Company, which, while under their ownership and management for twenty years, never paid less than a rate of 10 per cent, in dividends.
"The incorpor tɔrs are:
