ALL THE WORLD'S WARSHIPS.
WHAT THE POWERS OBTAINED FOR £5,000,000,000.
In a work of five hundred odd pages Me Fred T. Jane contrives every year to describe with an amazing wealth of accurate detail some- five thousand ships of war, representing the material and tangible product of an expenditure that must ran to about £5,000,000,000. It is no light task, as may easily be imaglued, for class of ship dealt with has at least four every class

illustrations-s photograph, a plau, a profile, SIEMSSEN & Co.,
and a silhouette,
A point which immediately strikes one on looking through the illustrations is the manner in which the desire for perpetual randiness for war has gripped the nasalanthorities of the world and impressed ite mark deeply upon the ships. The older warships, particularly in some foreign. navica, are crowded with tophanpall sort of possibly useful but probably useless gear scatered about or bailt apon the dock.
NOT BEAUTIFUL, BUT
The ships of to-day are vastly different. The dack is built clear and clean from end to end, and the caly excrescences allowed upon it are the gan-turrets, the couning.towers, the funnels, and solitary mat The gun-torrets most probably remain always but the masts will go can be worked Mofenily when the wireless

faus have replaced the old ventilating cowle, and internal combustion engines ent the funnel.
There are some who can see grace and beat in the super-Dreadnought of to-day. A few years heure the first-class fighting ship will he just a great, swiftly-locomotivo, lerol-docked barge with a few gun-houses that will appear to sight art instant before the guns are fired and disappear with the recoil.
is
Another feature that will attract attention, the growing practice of giving ship Faunels of unequal height. The object in doing this is to carry the smoke from the foremcat funnel well away from the navigating bridge just beneath. Vessels built in this fashion are the twenty and the destroyers of the 1909-10 programme battle-cruiser Indefatigable-while motorni other ships, including those of the Invincible and Warrior classes, have had their fero-fennel Jengthened after completion. Nerdlow to add, the effect is not beautiful, especially as later ships Lare funnels of wegant thicknesses as well.
AMERICA'S LEAD.
Two new fashions appear to be taking Arm hold on the navis of the world, judging by the plans iu Mr. Jone's book. The first in that of putting all the gun turrats on the middle line of the ship, and the second, of putting three guns, instand of two, into each turret. Tho United states led the way in the first of these, and in all her Dreadnoughts, although the number of big guns kns increased from eight to twelve the contre lino principal has been adliered to. Its great advantage is that it gives a free fire for all guns on either beam-the sacrifice of ahead and astert fire is not regarded as serious, in view of the tactical ideas now generally held.At the sme time, a ship that finds

Jerserech itself bows on to an enemy 's likely to find
the new arrangement rather uncomfortable, and tactics will for this reason play a very largo part in the next naval war.
The other pations which bave adopted the centre-line arrangement for all their Dread- honglits are Italy, Austria,,and, probably, Russia. In our own case, however, the develop- ment was gradual. Our fret soren Dread. nought battleships had three turrets on the mid- dle line and two abreast on the beams. Then came the Neptune, Hercules, and Colossus, in in which the furrets not on the middle line are placed en échelon, or diagonally, so that both can fire on each broadside, though only through
a_small_angle. In the Oriou, Lion, and the ships of the Thunderer olzes we have at last copied the American system. How these and other differences effect the fighting rower of
ships may be seen in the fact that the American Michigan, the British Dreadnought, and the German Thuringen all fire the same number of guns (eight) on the broadside, although the mumbora monated are sight, ton, and twelve respectively.
OTHER CHANGES,
There are some startling changes to be noted. in the distribution of anval strength. Rockon. ing in completed Dreadnoughts alane, Great Britain is, of course, first with 13, followed by Germany (6), the United States (4), and Erazil (2) The rest of the word is nowhere, since these nations alone have completed Dread. noughts at ses. If we include Dreadnoughts in all stages of construction, the position of Germany is much better, although, of course, she remains in the second place. For the British Empire the total is 32. for Germany 21, and for the United States 12. Jaran comes next with soren ships, then Italy, Austria Russia, and Franes, with four each. Brazil and Spain have three Dreadnoughts built and building, although the Spanish vessels are mach less powerful than the Br. zilion; Chili and the Argentine are building two apiece and Turkey brings up the rear with one.
The next Power to complete ila frst Dread- nought should be Italy, and the Austria, followed by the Argentine, Japan, France, and Russia. It will be seen that, when the tima mes for Dreadnoughts to stand alone as the guge of naval power, the complexion of the maritime world will have been considerably altered.
Here are some more infervating-in some
cases significant facts to be called from Mr.
