SAN FRANCISCO AND THE PANAMA

CANAL.

A San Francisco paper of the 4th ult, says!- The White Star is the latest of the large Atlantic steamship companies to soek docking facilities at San Francisco. Phillip A. 8. Frankliu, vice president of the company, will arrive here to-day as the representative of the corporation in its negotiations for facilities on

the Pacific Coast.

Franklin, who maintains his headquarters in New York, has been inspecting Jarbours in the. north-west and will continno his observations along the entire coast. He spent some days on Puget Sound, visiting at Tacoma and Stitle. He then visited Portland and made a study of conditious thero. He will reach San Francisco to-day on the Shasta Limited, and will begin at once an exhaustive investigation in behalf of his company. He will be met bore by G. N. Koeppel, local agent of the White Star.

CANAL AND IMMIGRATION.

It is the intention of the White Star company to place itself in a position that will enable it to make use of the Panama cavalas soon as it is completed. At present the company operates its large vessels between New York and Liver pool and also bas arrangements by, which it draws traffic from the Mediterranean.

White

I is to San Francisco chiefly that the Star will look for a Pacifio foothold. With the other large Atlantic stonmship companies it shares the belief that with the opening of the canal a large portion of the immigration mare- mont that now contres at New York will be dirarted to San Francisco. It is eager to be on the ground early and to Lave all the necre- sary arrangemouts completed well in advance of LANE, CRAWFORD & Co.,

the date set for the use of the caual.

ADVANTAGES OF HARBOUR. and from ALL WINE MERCHANTS.

156 The northorn harbours on this coast are Kenbject to private ownership, but in San Francisco the docks are publicly controled and every company can come in on an equal basis. Many of the large companies, however, prefer to own and operate their own termiuuls. Just what tours the White Star will pursue remains to be disclosed.

The projected improvements in the local harbour will afford facilities for these steamship lines at the southern end of the water front. Long piors will be built there and connections made for the prompt handling of passengers and freight

The White Star company is an American concern dominated by the Morgan interests. 1 is

a subsidiary of the Internacional Mercantile Marine company, sometimes called the alip trust. Among the directors are J. P. Morgan Jr., C. A: Griscom, E. J. Derwind and P. A. B. Wide or.

THREE LISES SEEE FACILITIES.

The White Star was some of the largest and aust commodious passenger vessels afloat. While it has handled a large percentage of the first class passenger business between the United Sintes and England, it has also carried it- migrants in great cumlar. Hbas averaged as many as 100,000 a yoir.

The White Star is the third big Atlantic line to seek a location here within two months, Herman Winter, the assistant manager of the Cunard company, was here in June, and at that time tunde a careful inspection of the harbour front. Last month representatives of the Hamburg-American company were here and entered into negotiations with the Laws for the purchase of their immene holdings on the harbour front near the foot of Fillmore girost. Other companies are said to have sought to arrange for docking accommodations on the Oakland eide of the bay.
