PORTUGUESE GOVERNMENT'S

UNDASINESS,

DIFFICULTIES OF THE REPUBLIC.

A special correspondent of a London paper writing from Oporto, July 27th, saya :---

There can be little doubt that the Portuguoso Government has been thoroughly frightened. Aloag

the whole Portuguese frontier, but especially in the North, from Valencs to Brag. rança, troopa are drawn up for the defence of the alone Repablic. At the little town of Bragança about two thousand troops are now quartered, and the total number of those under arms is said to exceed fifty thousand. But the Republican newspapers keep repeating that the whole nation is profoundly Repablican, and if this worn so a Monarchist foros might be allowed to enter the North of Portugal, and an army of far less than afty thousand mon concentrated upon a single point wuatl be walicient-to-crustr it. The rumours and alarms which now render the walls of Northern Portu- gal esou oore deserted than is their wont do not make the people love the present régime. The Portuguese nation is very docilo in appearance, but can be extraordinarily tenacious of what it has at heart. It was characteristic that, during the sixty years of Spanish rule (1580-1640), while The people outwually submitted, there wore very many in Portugal who still looked for the return of their King-Sebastian "the Desired "who had perished in Africa, but of whose death no definite tidings Ead ever como.

It is this attitude of patient expectation that gives so wide a field to the reporters (houteiros, as those who spread idle reports are called in Portugal) and makes the Government of s

INTIMATION

We can prove to you by facts and figures that it always pays to buy a REMINGTON TYPEWRITER.

We can prove to you that this would be equally true. if the price of the REMINGTON TYPEWRITER were many times what it is.

In other words, if you get another machine gratis, you could still many times better afford to buy a REMINGTON.
