THE MACLEOD FALLS.

A WOMAN'S DISCOVERY IN HUIMAPRICA,

Miss Olive Macleod, whose recent journey through Southern and Northern Nigeria and the German Kameruns to Fort Lamy, the capital of the French military territory of Chad, excited is much sympathetic interest, is as skilled sa authoress as the is an in

pid explorer. Whilst the object of her journey was to visit the grave of her sweet- heart, Lient. Boyd Alexander, who was mar dered by the nativer, she accomplished a valuable work of exploration in the discovery of the falls on the Mac Kabi river (named the Macleod Falls in her honour). She writes about

The party consisted of herssif sad fr. atd complement Mr. P. A. Talbot, and the unal

of natives. Her story begins on reaching Lake Léré, in French Ubangi. a few miles from the border of the German Kameruns, an enchanted | region, where, she says, mystery over reigns..

of the hitherto undiscovered falls of Arploration the Mao Kabi river. He had gone to seek them once before, but said that then b within sound of the fall an lapenetrable tangle of bash and creeper divided him from his goal black man has seen the falls, for the tradition is that a devil makes them his hiding-place." It was towards this inviting spot, where, on- ing to tsetse fles, horses could not live, that the party setout. Orer watercourses, in the beds of which were the tracks of all sorts of beasts, they journeyed. The carriers procrastinated aud only dribbled in at sundown, so got fired and fell down long before we reached our destina {tion." One of them, apparently, frightened of the devil of home falls, dropped his pack and bolted off home whether that was.

The river was safely erased, though the previous year twe Europeans had been upset thera and were never seen again. The natives said that hippopotami attacked the boats, but Miss Macleod saggeats that as the unfortunats mea were traders, travelling with much mer- chandise, the kippopotami might not have been solely responsible. Together we broke throu h high spiky gs, which conmeated sharp granite rocks, and picked our way in and out of scatter- ed mimosas and low scrub." Bearch for the falls cccupied several days. In the river bed grew blue and pink flowers bosib the. larurient foliage of water-fed trees." The Mao Kabila i now spread out as far as theore could see into

an immense swamp.

TINE OF REAL HARDSHIP.

Then," says Miss Macleod, began a time of real hardship, for we had to force our way through grass that left its dust in our eyes and noses, and its spiked barbs in our lege and bodies over granite boulders that caught and reflected every ray of the sun till the beat was like a furnace, and our feet and hands swelled, and face, eyelides, and lips bliste ed, while our throata became so parshed that we cou'd kürdly swallow, and grew siok."

Torn by the mimosa thorns they at last saw the rim again, 400ft. beneath them. Then, comamaced a descent of two or three

Miss Macleod makes light of the privations and dangers the party underwent, but, reading between the line, it is easy to aes that the white woman who accomplished the jourary was en lued with far from ordinary courage,

A SEPTUAGENARIAN.

Many happy returns to Mr. Punch! He reached his 70th birthday last month, having made his first appearance on July 17, 1841, but the span allotted to mortals is a mere chapter in bie supertamen career. He is in the Arst

There is, in fact, nothing in Mr. Ponoh a successful career which approaches it in fascination. It is a survey of the seven decades, as recorded by that glorious company of artists which incinted Leech, Doyle, Tenniel, Sam- 050 bourne, Du Maurier, and Keene, and their

We see sweet womanhood running through the gamut of fashion from crinolines and filtle bonusts to bobble-skirtsand mushroom hats, and our dandies shedding their whiskers and socks, to appear evoutually with their necks rising out of two-inch barbattes of starched linen, Of various and delightful a record it is imposible to give a detailed analysis, but a few examples taken haphazard will give some of its nature.
