INTERVIEW WITH C.ER. MANAGER FOR JAPAN AND CHINA.
The Japan Ganxette of Saturday, July 29th which reached us by yesterday's minii, œntains, the following:

Capisin R. Swain, in command of the N.I.K. Yokohama-Shanghai liner auge-maru, who is cne of the best-known and most experienced navigators on the coast, mentions that in severe typhoon weather or salamic disturbances, it is quite a usual thing to find the currente very mach changed in the neighbourhood of Shira home, and a set of from twenty-five to thirty miles is by no means unusual:
The latest news to hand of the condition of the C.P.B. steamer Empress of China, now shore on the Mera Real, near Shirahama, is that there is some hope of the vessel being float. d. Mr. T. W. Payne, the Manager of the C.P.R. Co. for Japan and China, who was a pasong in the vessel, and who since the accident haa remained at the scone, arrived in Yokohamn this afternoon, together with Captain Tipple, Lloyd's Barroyor, who proceeded to Shirahama on Thursday afternoon to investigate the damage and report thereon.
Mr. Payne, who has had a rather strenuous time at Shirahama during the last two days tuperintending the BITArgements made for the temporary
accommodation of the passengers and the collecting of their baggage for dispatch to Yokohama, arrived here shortly after noon, and, theagh busily engrossed with matters con- erning the sccident, very kindly consorted to give a representative of the Gazette an interview detailing the circumstance of the aeoident, the trans-shipment of passengers, and the prospects of refloating the vessel, Mr. Payne's statement confirms in almost every detail the account given in our issus last evening, as gathered from interviews with passengers, with the additional Information that should the weather continue fue there is still hope of getting the vemol off.
The Empress of China loft Vancouver on the 14th instant, and on the whole bad a remarkably fino royaga zorous, the ses being smooth during the first ten days. Later, on approaching the const, the reather bacanie clously and foggy, and the Captain decided to slow down. Although the steamer conld easily have reached Yokohama late on Wednesday night, it was decided not to get into port until Thursday morning, at the hour notified in parlier messages to the Company's office.
At six otlock on Thursday morning the steamer was going very slowly, when he suddenly stepped, the impact being very gentle. A harry KBR was running at the time, and a dense fog obscured everything from view. When the easel struck there was no excite ment
