· THE RUBBER EXHIBITION.
OPENING OF THE CONFERENCE.
The formal opening of the Conference which has been arranged in connection with the Hab. ber Exhibition took place at the Agricultural Hall in the presence of a large number of delegates.
Bir. Henry A. Blake, President of tho Er. hibition, in welcoming the delegates, said that #great adtrance had been made in the industry since the last exhibition in 1908, and the prosent exhibition was notable in that it contained exhibits from every rubber-growing country i the world, In 1908 the area under rubber oclliva- tion in the Middle East was 450,000 Reres; to-day the seroage was more than doubks, and
very large area was also being devoted to rubber cultivation in South and Central America. in East and West Africs, and in other territories. In making estimates of the future to output of rubber it was necessary, domover, rake coneiderable deductions for plautstions established under unfavourable circumstances of avil, climate, or situation. In regard to the production of the near future, it bad to be borno in mind that the Para treea
since
the year 1903 would not begin to show results before
planted at the earliest. In the Fear East it bad 1913 at been the custom to plant the leven brasiliensis, bat it would seem from good authority the Ceara rubber had an excellent future before it, and he had heard on reliable authority of at least one Cowra plantation which had begun to yield two years after planting.
He congratulated the exhibitors apon the fine display made. With regard to the Helgian
