LATEST STEAMER MOVEMENTS,

SOME STORIES OF THE LATE KING LEOPOLD

From an article of grant personal interest: which Mr. Xavier Puoli contributes to this month's Contemporary Beview, on the late King of the Belgians, we take the following paragraphs

I am bound to admit that the King spared neither time nor energy when he scentod hat he called a "capital stroke of business." "I can still see him, ons afternoon, leaving M. Waldock-Rousseau's villa at the Cap d'Antibes, abar Cannes, where he had gone to pay this Prime Minister a visit, and perceiving, on the road leading to the station, a magicent walled in park that looked as if it worn aban doned,

Who awas.thas property?" he askąd sud- deals.

"An Englishman, air, who never comes near it."

"We have time to look over it," said the King, "before this train leaves for Nice. Some body fetch the gardener!"

The gardener was not to be found, but the gate was open. Leopold II, walked in, without hesitation followed by Baron Buey, my collea gue, M. Olivi, and myself, hurried along the desertel paths and praised the beauty of the vegetation; bat, when it became time to go we discovered to spr dismay that Someono had looked the gate while wo wore inside. There was no kay, no passibility of opening it. We called and shouted in vain. Nobody appeared. The train was due before long; the King began to grow impatient. What wore we to do? Olisi had a flash of genius. Ho ran to a shed, the roof of which showed shove the nearest thickes, and returned with a ladder. "If your Majesty does not mind, you will be able to get over the wall"

The King scapted impassively, and thes ascent beau. Baron Suey went drat, then I and the King, in his turn, climbed the rage, supported by Olivi. Baron Snoy and I. prorped upon the tor of the wall, bolsted the King after 3. We were joined by Olivi; and. then a dreadful thing happened the ladder swaged and fall! Thore we were, all four of us, jastride the wall, swinging our legs without any

mears of getting down on the other side.

"We look like burglars," said the King, with forged laugh.
